Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising can tell you a lot about a country. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. |
22/F/Japan>>> TOEFL CBT 223 (5.0) I strongly agree with the idea that advertisement shows the
characteristics of a country where the ad is broadcasting. It is because I
analyzed some advertisements of some countries when I was a college students and
watch some typical examples that shows the characteristics of the countries.
In the class, I learned that Korean advertisements have
more regulation to expression and especially sexual description was strictly
prohibited and even the scene where a woman wears only their inner wear is
banned in the country. This strongly reflects the fact that Korean
people tend to hesitate to talk about too sensual topics openly.
In Japan, on the other hand, we can see the
advertisement of woman's inner wear or stoking, even napkin for the
period. Some of these products, such as brazier that makes womanfs'
body line look more beautiful than their real figure's one, becomes very
popular. This fact clearly shows that Japanese women do not care so
much that men look at woman's inner wear or something that can be associated
with woman's sexual things on these commercial.
The U.S 's commercial tell us that Americans prefer to
express everything clearly. Pepsi's advertisement declare that Pepsi
is more delicious than CoCa Coke, the rival company's products.
Such "obvious" expression is incredible in Japan,
because Japanese law about advertising prohibit such comparison to other
companies' products. This means, I think, Japanese people tend to prevent
others' feeling from being hurt by the comparison, which imply the inferiority
of others more than the United States.
As these examples shows, different countries have
different way of advertising depending on their countries' values, and moral
standard. Therefore we can learn about a country's charactertistics by
watching its advertisement.
