Human being has discovered various kinds of things that brings more convenient, enjoyable and comfortable life.  But I think the most remarkable one is the discovery of penicillin, one of well-known antibiotics now.  It is discovered by an English bacteriologist.
 
  Penicillin is such a famous antibiotics that I had known it as a wonderful medicine since I was an elementary school student.  I sometimes hear the name of this medicine in literature works whose background is wartime and theme is poverty in Japan.  In the works, doctor says " If we had had penicillin, patients would have recovered. "  Whenever I read these kind of lines, I used to think that penicillin was miracle.    

 

  The discovery prolonged our life expectancy dramatically because of its effectiveness to various kinds of diseases.  It is effective medicine to cure pneumonia or other viral diseases.  Therefore this medicine has saved many people, that would be killed without this useful medicine.  

 

  Especially, I think that its contribution to cure of pneumonia is outstanding.  Because pueumonia itself is such serious disease that even now patients of the disease are usually hospitalized.  With the analysis of this fact, I cannot help guessing that pneumonia might have been a desperate disease at that time.  Moreover, there might be much larger number of people dying of pneumonia because cold or flu can develop into pneumonia.  Thinking about the terror of this disease, I was astonished by the greatness of this discovery.
