Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Telephones and email have made communication between people less personal. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. |
22/F/Japan>>> TOEFL CBT 223 (5.0) Indirect communication method such as telephone and
e-mail make our communication method more rapid and easy one. As you
know telephone is so essential for our life we cannot imagine life without
telephone. Especially in the developed countries like Japan, widespread
portable handy phone or cell phone accelerates this tendency.
Gradually, e-mail has also been prevalent and become one of the essential
communication method.
As for the answer of this question, I cannot judge
whether or not such indirect communication methods make our communication less
personal. It is because these convenient machines has both good and bad
effect on our making intimate relationship with one another.
Telephone and e-mail enables us to communicate with
others more handy. We do not need to meet the person whom we want to talk
to. Therefore, we can keep frequency of keeping in touch with others and
prevent ourselves from making relationship with others thinner by physically far
distance between we and the guy. For instance, e-mail is very
suitable for those who feel troublesome about writing letter and sealing stamp
on the envelop and putting it on a post like me, because we can send e-mail with
only clicking battens on line. In this point, I am sure that such
communication method plays an important part in our keeping personal
communication with others.
However sometimes such convenient communication method
make us too lazy and coward to meet someone whom we need to say our
opinion. Sending our message to others with indirect communication is so
easy for us that we tend to rely on them. When we have to say
someone what we do not want to say, we tend to depend on these methods to avoid
looking he/she getting angry or crying to hear our words. However
without direct meeting, the person that we have to persuade cannot understand
our real thought, or our relationship between the people might become
worse. Without direct watching our visual reaction like face expression or
attitude, the people will overlook clue of understanding our real
thought. Or the person might regard us as impolite or insincere
people. Therefore, I think the more we depend on such methods when telling
others our important message, the less we can make intimate relationship with
them.
In this way, indirect communication method like telephone or
e-mail has contradicting effect on our human relationship. Thus, we need
to consider whether or not the information is suitable for sending with
telephone or e-mail. If we have to say important things to others, I
recommend you to meet the person and tell it directly.
