<< In my opinion, a sense of humor is the most important among other characteristics. I want to compare two similar experiences that I have. One is I usually feel in my country Japan. The other is I experienced here in Cambridge this summer. In both cases, I think a sense of humor is a very important factor expecially when we communicate with foreign people. In Japan after daily lectures, I usually go to a laboratory to learn experiments. I study biochemistry there under the supervision of one of Ph.D students. He is from South Korea. At first he couldn't speak Japanese at all, though he speaks fluently now. Without having enough communication tools, he seemed not to good at communicating at first. I thought even he doesn't want to talk with us Japanese. I didn't meet him for a long time because I stopped going to the laboratory during the period. After 6 months, I visited the laboratory to learn again and he became a supervisor of me. He spoke a fluent Japanese and I noticed that he is a very chatter person. That is, he was not a shy person as I thought earlier. What is most hit my minds is his sense of humor. His humor is so great that everyone in the laboratory laugh when talking with him. I also can't stop myself laughing when talking with him. Now, he is one of the necessary persons in the laboratory with his sense of humor. I have a similar experience now here in Cambridge. This time I am him. I study biochemistry among England researchers. That is, I am the only foreigner in the laboratory. At first I couldn't understand their pronounciation at all, though I can't still understand fully now. To have a smooth relationship with them, a sense of humor may be important. Otherwise they might mistake me as I refuse them. To have a good relationship with them, I want to try speaking to them as much as possible, though I can't still make them laugh out loud. |
