I think all these three methods are necessary for learners. By doing things, we can have an actual experience. Even if we hear many things from someone else if we don't take action, we can not learn sufficiently. I think reading things or listening to what others talk about is just a motivation of doing by ourselves. I admit the importance of doing things by ourselves and have a real experience. But if you don't read at all, you must lack some important part of your life. By reading some books, we know the idea of people who are already dead or whom we can not meet in real life. The idea of someone we can't have a direct contact will help us when doing things. If we ignore the voice of them, we might narrow our world to a great extent. Listening to what people say can also help us when we learn. Of course, if they write some books and if we read it, that might be enough. But usually we can not understand only by reading books. That is, we can not understand all the writer want to tell us or implies. In such a case, if we directly talk with the writer, we can understand what they want to tell us to the full. On top of all that, I prefer to learn by doing things by myself.
By doing ourselves, we can have hands on experiences. In my university, we studied human anatomy just one year ago. When we learn human anatomy, we learn by ourselves. Of course, teaching assistants and a professor help us to learn. But they don't tell us so much. We read our textbook or atlas and begin the task.
So when we learn human anatomy, reading boks help us very much. We even bring our textbook and atlas to the anatomy room. If we bring our textbook to the anatomy room, it is stained by blood and oil. So some of us hate to bring their textbooks to the room, and do their tasks without reading any books. Instead of bringing their books, they memorize all what they must learn. But except for those few genious people, most people bring their books to the anatomy room because they can not memorize all the knowledge.
The information we can get from our ear is also important. Especially when we learn some foreign languages, I think listening is very important. When I study English, I always keep in mind that I must do all the listening, reading, and writing practices. I think only reading and writing practices are not sufficient. By doing listenign practices, we can strengthen the effect of reading and writing practices.
I have said a little about the merits and demerits of doing things, reading books, and listening to what people say. On top of all that, I still prefer to practice by doing things by myself. I can make many explanation about why I think so. But to tell the truth, the only one reason is that doing things practically is very fun for me.
