I have several friends at my university. Some of them are similar to me, while others are different from me. I don't choose my friends intentionally. I choose my friends just by chance. So I have both types of friends and having both types of friends help me to a great extent. I can enjoy my university life very much by talking, eating a lunch, or sometimes travelling with them. Some people say that the purpose of entering the university is not to make your friends. In some sense he might be true. Yes, we must study and get some necessary knowledge at our university. Still, I think making friends with many people can be one of the main purposes we enter the university. In the following two paragraph, I want to explain advantages of having friends who are different from me and similar to me.
As you know if you have friends who are different from you, you can learn or experience a new world they have. By having a time with them or talking with them, you can learn that there are variety of people in the world who have different ideas and customs. I live in Japan and Japan is an uni-racial country, so you might think that I can not have such friends in my country. Yes, I admit that. If I go some multi-racial country, I could have more people who are born in variety of backgrounds and have differnt culture and ideas. Yet, in my country, I can have friends who think in a way different from me. Of course when we talk, we often surprised that we all experience the similar things when we were children. For example, when we were eight o nine years old or so, most boys in my country collected some kind of seals. And when we were nine or ten years old, most of all Japanese boys enjoyed making plastic car models. And when we talk, we all realize that we have similar experiences. Although we experience the same thing, we feel and memorize it in a different way. So even in my country, I can have friends who are different from me and by having time with them, I can find or experience a new world.
By talking with friends who are similar to me, I can enjoy the conversation and have a comfortable time. The thought of those friends can synchronize with my thought. So I can talk with them in a more closely manner. On top of that, those friends can take a role as a mirror. They are similar to me. By spending a time with them, I can notice that how I might be seen from others. Sometimes behaviors of those friends seem to be charming, whereas sometimes their behavior seem to be ugly or arrogant. By seeing or observing the behavior of those friends, I can improve the behavior of myself.
In conclusion, I think both types of friends can help me. Friends who are different from me can help me by offering a new world. Spending or having a common time is very enjoyable and exciting. On the other hand, if I have friends who are similar to me, I can be relaxed because they think in the same way as I think. And since they take a role as a mirror of myself, I can notice both charming and ugly points of mine. Though I admit the merits of having both types of friends, I prefer to have a time with friends different from me. They offer me new points of view. By talking with them, I can explore a new world I have not ever seen.
