| << I disagree with the statement that there is nothing that young people can teach older people. Although some may say that older people know things better because they have more experience, this is not true in all cases. The younger people can teach the older people firstly when the young people have more highly specialised knowledge and skills than the older. Second case is that the younger can teach older because the former is more likely to be flexible in accepting learning new and different things. The first case where the young people can teach the older people occurs when the former have more highly sophisticated and specialised knowledge than another. Attainment of knowledge and skills depends not on ages but on whether individuals has experience in schools or elsewhere, thus there is no wonder even if the young is superior to the old. It can be often observed that young people who are skilled and educated have better knowledge, so that they can teach older people both at schools and working places. This may be frequently seen in English and computer schools, where young teachers, even new graduates, teach students who may be at similar ages as their parents. This leads to a consideration that young people can teach the older people when the younger is highly skilled or has enough knowledge. The second case for young people to teach the older is that the former can be more flexible in looking at things, which enables them to look at thing s from various ways. People gain experience ages by ages, which brings them more confident thus makes their ideas and attitudes toward things more concrete, fixed and decided. This is, of course, good in a sense that they establish their own views, at the same time, this process can keep them from trying to know or try something new and different, from listening to opinions of others, and so forth. In contrast, as for the young, because they have less decided attitudes due to less amount of experience, they are more likely to accept something new, try other things and to have preferable attitudes to challenge new things. In this sense, the old can be taught or reminded by young people that it is also important to look at things from other view points and to try some new things. It is sometimes said that the older is superior is anything because they have greater experience. People go through many things over time, thus it cannot be denied that older have more experience and know the world better. This can be true in some ways such as how to deal with problems in human relations and such. However, this is not all the case, for it is clear that there is something that the young can teach the older. This is due to the fact that the young can be superior at times when they have more specialised knowledge and when they have more flexibility in their attitudes to something new and different. In conclusion, it can be said that there are things that young people can teach the older people. This is on the basis of considerations on cases where the former are superior in some fields in terms of knowledge and skills and where young people are flexible so that they can look at things from variety of perspectives. |
