Now, in my country, Japan, several high schools allow students to choose their favirite subjects to learn and they do not learn some subjects they hate or do not need for their entrance exam at all.
It seems to be more efficient way for them to acquire their necessary knowledge in their future.  In some sense, I admit its efficiency of choosing their favorite subjects.  But I do not agree with the idea that high school should admit them not to learn the subjects that they detest but is really necessary for them,  It is because there are some subjects necessary for high school students to live as adult persons in the future. I would like to mention some subjects that students should learn whether or not they like to learn to support my opinion.

Native language should be learned by high school students, since it is fundamental for them to understand everything and to express themselves.  When we listen to some lecture, we understand the explanation based on our own native language.  In my experience, even when we learn something in foreign language like English, we understand it after translating it into our native language, since most of us understand the grammar or remember words of the foreign language translating our native language.  Even after mastering the foreign language, our native language continue to have some effect on our mind.  Expression of ourselves is important skills for us to communicate with others both in workplace and in private space.  Eloquence or copious vocaburary is key for successful communication.  Therefore high school students should enhance their ability of using their native language despite their preference of subjects.

In this way, native language is essential for a high school student to live as an adult person in the future.  Therefore, even of they do not like to learn it, they should go on to improving the skills of native language for enhance of ability to understand things and expressing his/her opinion.
