| << I disagree with the statement. In my country, high school students are required to learn certain subjects. They must study core subjects which are assigned to all high school students in my country. In addition to that, each school assigns their students some optional subjects to study. In my opinion, students should study variety of subjects. They must study generally, not specially. It is likely that most students don't decide what they want to do in the future. If school allows these students to learn whatever they want, some of them might be confused to some extent. Even some university or college students don't know precisely what they want to do in the future. Of course, students who go some technical school such as medical schools or law schools know what they would do in the future. But even those students don't make up their minds while they were high school students. For example, my brother is now 3rd grade students in his high school and wants to enter a medical school. But when he was 1st and 2nd grade student, he wanted to learn finance in the future. If his school allows him to study what he wants, he might not learn science at all. In this sense, I think students should learn various subjects when they were high school students. Of course, if students decide clearly what they want to be in the future, some subject might be an obstacle. As for me, I decided to be a surgeon when I was 6 years old. For me, the subject of traditional Japanese language seemed so senseless. I don't like the subject, because I have no interest about the way our ancestors think or behave. So I always slept during the classes. But as I have said above, most students don't decide what they want to learn so early. Since schools are prepared for many students, the benefit of minority like me should be ignored. You may think that medical students learn only what they like. It may be true to some extent. All of us are interested in medicine and want to be a doctor in the future. But even in medicine, there are variety of subjects. For example, until now, I have learned anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, virology, bacteriology, and so on. On top of that, I must study clinical subjects like surgery and internal medicine. Even in surgery, we have many subjects like neurosurgery or urology. Of course, we don't good at all the subjects. But we must learn all the subjects. We are required to aquire generalized knowledge to be a good doctor. In the same way, it might be desirable if high school students aquire generalized knowledge as an eighteen years boy or girl. |
