| << It is agreed that high schools should allow students to study the courses that the students want to take. This is due to the fact that students can concentrate on what they want to learn more thoroughly, and that they are more likely to study hard when they study what they like. However, even when they are allowed to specific courses, students should take some of the course that are out of their preferences as well, since this leave some options and opportunities to find their interests that are not yet realised. The first reason the students should be allowed to study certain courses that they like to study is that students can concentrate on subjects that they would like to study more thoroughly. This helps students to gain more highly specialised knowledge about the subjects that they take at the schools. This knowledge will also help them when they have to take entrance exams for tertiary educational institutions such as universities. Supposing that a high school student like to study English and realises that his or her major at a university should be in English, if she is allowed to take many English course, she can concentrate on studying English, and gain more sophisticated knowledge about it. This makes it easier for her to get herself ready for the entrance exams and for courses at university. This indicates that students should be permitted to course that they like, as they can concentrate on the fields that they are interested in. Another reason the students should be allowed to take the course that they like is that students tend to study harder in the subjects they choose according to their preferences. You have supposedly experienced that you are willing to work harder when you work on subjects that you are interested in than ones you hate. For example, in my case, I think I worked harder on English, some social sciences and chemistry that I liked, when I was a high school student. This was probably because my interests and curiosity in these courses motivated myself to study harder in order to improve my knowledge on them. It seems to apply to many people that they can motivate study harder when they study what they are interested in. This leads to a consideration that students study better if they are allowed to choose the courses that they like. Even though students should be allowed to take the courses that they like, they should also be required to study some subjects from various fields that are out of their interests, since this leaves some opportunities for students to find what hey really want to study. Although some students may know which kind of course they are interested in and they can do well on by the time they get into high schools, the majority of the students do not really realise what they want to study and to be specialised. Even when they know what they are interested in, it happens that their real interest and talent lie on something else, which will be probably realised after they study subjects other than ones that they have been thinking the best for them. For example, one student may like math very much, and she or he thought they want to be specialised in math. One time, this student has to take some traditional Japanese literature course that is compulsory for all the students. Through these courses, this student may find out that their true interests lie on the literature not on math, which will have a great impact on this student's future. It is important to lead the students to find what they are really interested in, as it helps students to find themselves and their life work. Therefore, high schools should offer some compulsory subjects that do not relate to the current interests or preferences of students, because it leaves some opportunities for students not to miss to find themselves. In conclusion, high school should allow the students to take the course that they like. This is because students can concentrate on certain subjects that they are interested in and that they study well when they study the course that they like. Moreover, high schools also require the students to study some subjects that do not suit the preferences of the students, as these courses can help them to realise what their real interests are. |
