It is agreed that advertising encourage us to buy things we do not really need, for the companies usually intend to make advertisements to attract and convince buyers to purchase their products irrespective to necessity. Although it is true that advertising can sometimes help us to know new products that can improve our life, this is unlikely to happen in many occasions. Advertising usually makes us buy the products that we do not need, because advertisements are made by the companies that attempt to convince to buy their products regardless to the necessity of the products. In many cases, the companies make advertisements using some specialists and try to present their products as nicely as possibly and to get the consumers believe that the goods are very nice, handy, and so forth. Because of this, consumers can buy these products, even if they are not realistically necessary, and go and buy them. Supposing one day you see new mobile phone on a really well-presented TV commercial, you will probably feel like buying the new product, if you are rally into this kind of goods. Even though you have just got your new one a couple of months earlier, you may still buy it if you can afford. This is one example where advertisement can cause you consumers to buy unnecessary goods. What is worse is that some companies actually over exaggerate the advantages of the products and hide the disadvantages of them, which can give the consumers wrong information. In this case, especially, the consumers who buy the products would worse off. Advertising, however, can sometimes simply helps consumers to know new products that can possibly improve their life. Advertisements are supposedly designed to let the customers know the products that are new to them so that the customers can examine the products and think if the good is necessary. Thus, the adverting can occasionally give us some good information. Nonetheless, this is the case only when the advertisement is simply to describe the new products neutrally and when the goods are necessary. The simple description in the advertisement is not often seen, for companies try to present the products nicely as mentioned above. More importantly, in our society in the developed world, anything new is hardly necessary for our life. That is, we have already got almost everything enough to have convenient life, thus advertisements is only to promote these luxury goods that are in most cases unnecessary. The advertising is to stimulate our desires to have even more luxury and convenient life that go beyond necessity. These advertisements on luxury goods are often found in developing world as well, which is also regarded as an evil. These advertisements encourage and drive the poor in the poor countries to purchase the luxury and unnecessary products at the cost of buying basic necessities. Considering these things, it can be said that advertisements are more likely to make the consumers buy some goods that are not necessary rather than to proved us with useful information. |
