| << The university that I attend seems to be constantly improving its facilities such as computer laboratories, some buildings for classrooms, research centres, gyms including many sporting facilities, cafeteria, and bar. If the university gets a gift of money, it will be the best way for the university to spend the money to improve and upgrade the library of the university. This is because our existing one cannot be med the need of students. The library is important because we cannot survive our university life without is, because we have to use it not only to obtain references of the lectures, tutorials and practicals but also to gather information for your assignments or projects. This applies to every courses ranging from arts to engineering, and from diplomas to PhD. However, our present library does not meet our need sufficiently because it is too small and does not have many recent books or journals, which causes students serious problems. Because of this, it often happens that we cannot find any relevant current sources in the library or the books that we want to borrow is already taken by someone else. This is a big problem especially when you are required to use books but not the Internet, and when we really rush to find some sources to make it by the due date. Moreover, it can be said that the quality of your assignment can be dependent on which kind of sources that you can get. For instance, I had to write an Essay about recent Asian Economic situation some time ago, and I needed to find several books from the library. However, the library did not hold any current book on Asian Economy for lending, as the very limited number of the current book for lending was already taken by someone else. The most recent one I could find was published in 1996, which is even before Asian Economy Crisis thus the book was rather irrelevant. I could use some bits of this book for the background information, but I had to go through lots of electrical material such as electronic journals to do the major parts of assignment. I wanted to use more books rather than electronically journals because they the lecture wanted us to use some books for the assignment. I could obtain enough number of references after all because there are some books that are not for lending, and students can make photocopies of the book. But this is a little problematic because the students have to pay for photocopying the books. It is enormous amount to take photocopies because many students have to photocopy the non-lending books. This is not environmentally friendly either, in a sense that you use many paper. The insufficiency in the books and journals cause us trouble When I need to find the reference of the lectures, which the lectures used some in the classes other than the fixed textbooks. In these cases, I would prefer to have the book rather than photocopying the book from the non-lending one. I sometimes really need what my lecturers used to give us the lecture, when I do not understand the content of class well. In that case, because there are only very limited number of the book, I cannot have it, so I have to make photocopies from the non-lending one. I prefer to have the book than making photocopies because latter saves me time and money. That is, I have to photocopy so many journals Internet articles and such even without the photocopies of the references of the class. The total amount that I have to photocopy is really enormous. Moreover, it usually happens that the other chapters of the books are necessary, though I cannot just photocopy whole book. I make a photocopy of a chapter that lectures told me, and I bring it back home, and I find other chapters in the same book are also necessary for me. It feels terrible especially when I have to hurry doing the reading the day before the tutorial discussion or so. Finally, I would like to emphasise again that these cases happen to every student in every course. Thus, the upgrading the library will better off every student, which will justify the spending money on the library. |
