Many children like to watch television in recent years, and many of them spend much time in front of TV watching the programs especially cartoon animations. It cannot necessarily say that watching TV is bad for these children unless the TV programs are too violent or such, because they can learn many things from TV. However, it is problematic for the children if they spend most of their time putting aside other things that are meaningful to them.

Watching TV can benefit the children in a sense that they can learn many things from TV programs. This is especially the case when they watch the programs that are made for educational purposes. There are many programs to teach children basic English, math, science, society that are easy to understand. These programs are to explain the subjects, trying to get children interested and motivated, so that the children can enjoy the program at the same time as they learn. This enables them to learn effectively when the programs successfully draw the attention of the children. Even through ordinary programs such as dramas, cartoons, comedies, they can indirectly experience things that they would not otherwise know about, which will widen the view of the children.

The TV programs also can help the children to help to master their first language. Young children usually like to watch TV cartoons and these programs for children such as Sesame Street. When they see these programs, they listen to the TV and pick up some words from the programs. Especially the latter one can teach the children the language because this program contains some language exercises. Now that a large number of women work outside the households, children spend more time alone, the children have less opportunities to listen to others' talking or to someone talking to them. Instead, the TV can play some roles in teaching the children the language used in the country.

TV programs that are imported from overseas can teach children other than their first languages. The more frequently the children listen to the languages, the better and the quicker they master the second language. This is because young children are capable of leaning to speak languages without any knowledge in the grammars until around they get into junior high school. Moreover, they can easily become capable of pronouncing the words correctly in the second language quickly, if they start it when they are very young. Thus foreign TV programs can be a good means to teach the children some other languages.

Despite these benefits for children to watch TV, this turns into a problem when the children become TV addicts and then put aside everything else. Activities such as playing with other children, communication with family members, playing outside, dong homework and so forth must take priority over TV, as they are more important for healthy growth of the children. This is because TV programs merely provide them with indirect experience, though children should have many direct experiences to gain necessary skills in their lives. Ideally, children should go and play with others to establish their first language, and should study at school or get others teach directly to them, which will also enables them to obtain communication skills. Thus, TV should be seen as a supporting method to teach children. TV is after all good for children unless they do not neglect other important activities.
