| << Zoos have many kinds of animals that cannot be otherwise seen in our lives, thus are one of the most popular entertainments for people especially children. Besides this entertainment, it is believed that zoos have some useful purposes. These can be focused on their purposes to educate the children and to conserve the animals. The first useful purpose of the zoos is their educational purposes in teaching people specifically children abut animals. In our era, we can hardly see any wild animal in our daily life, therefore we do not contact these animals that used to be seen just as normal. Furthermore, the zoos have various kinds of animas that are originally from all over the world, thus we can see the animals that inhibit far away from our place. Thus it is obvious that the zoos enable us to see and hopefully touch these animals, which will make us gain more knowledge of the animals. The contacts with animals, more importantly, make us realise that there are many animals that live on the same planet and that humans and non-human animals are not isolated. That is, buy patting the animals, we realise that there animals with whom we share this planet earth, and that we should have environmental friendly lifestyle, say through recycling. In short, the zoos play in educating us to widen our knowledge of the animals and to be environmentally friendly. The second useful purpose of the zoos is that they are the places to conserve the animals or species that are facing danger of death or extinction. The zoos, though can be seen as cruel to keep the wild animals in the cages, can also protect these animals from death. The serious environmental destruction after the industrialisation has led to loss of forests that are shelters of the animals. The over-hunting by humans also cause the animals face the danger of the extinction. This has led to a situation that the many animals are seriously in need of conservation, in which the zoos can take a part. One example for this can be pandas. Without the zoos or other facilities to conserve these animals, they can go extinction because they have to be dependent on us humans on their shelter and food that they used to obtain from the forests on their own. Moreover, in the sense of the conservation of animals, there is another role that are played by the zoo. That is, the zoos can be used as a hospital of the wild animals. When wild animals are injured or sick, they are sent to the zoos soon after they are found. The zoos are capable of treating these animals properly, and can give them rehabilitation until the animals can go back to the wild. You may think that they do not use the zoos to conserve these animals, because animals have to be stressed by been looked at by humans. Ideally, it is the best if this conservation is carried out by creating places that are as similar to the original natural place as possible where the animals can live freely. However, in practice, it is hard to do this conservation without commercial profit. Thus, the zoos are used to conserve these animals. In conclusion, it can be said that zoos have some useful purposes to educate the people, and to conserve the animals. However, it should be noted that the zoos could be also seen as an evil that rob the animals of their free lives in the wild. If the zoos built on the purpose of the entertainment, they will lose meaningfulness because the cost that animals have to suffer in the cages overrides out mere entertainment purpose. |
