I admit that our generation and our parents' generation are different in many ways. Our parents were born just after World War 2. They struggled to reconstruct our completely destroyed country. They were called DANKAI generation. On the other hand, when we were born, Japan was already one of the most developed countries in the world. So we didn't have to struggle any more from the beginning. I think difference between our parents and us comes from this point.
Our parents' generation is called DANKAI in Japanese. I don't know exactly what the word means. But I have an image of struggling or something to the word. Our parents were grown up in poor circumstances. Everyone hoped or expected the welthy future of our country. I respect their efforts, because they truely succeeded in reconstructing the poor nation and brought their children wealth and safety.
On the other hand, we were brought up in wealthy and safety circumstances from the beginning. Until 1970, Japan has achieved a great progress in many fields especially in finance. According to our parents' great efforts, Japan is now one of the biggest countries in the world. So their children, us, don't feel the necessity of struggling any more. Instead, we can do what we want. We are allowed to pursuit our own dreams. The dreams don't necessarily lead to money because we are already wealthy enough. We don't need to struggle for tommorow's meal.
I don't know which generation is better. Our parents generation struggled to the full. They can said to be strong minded. They never bend their thoughts, thus they could reconstruct our nation. On the other hand, our generation is said to be kind hearted. We can take situations flexibly. We choose to change our minds than quarreling with others. I can't decide which generation is superior, maybe no one can decide it. But I know from my experience that we can learn many things from our parents' generation, if we respect their thoughts and the way they lived.
