We, Japanese students, don't like to talk during our classes. This is mainly because we are shy to tell our thoughts in front of all of our classmates. But we all know that we should participate in our classes more positively. My university changed its education system from the former, lecture-only style to a new, lecture and discussion style. From this experiense, I have noticed that if we take both types of classes, we can learn more effectively.
We don't like to insist our thoughts in front of others. So we are sometimes misunderstood by foreigners that we don't think nothing at all. But this is not because we are empty minded, but because we respect all participants' harmony than our own individuality. I love such Japanese modest and not selfish characteristics. But as for lectures, I don't think such characteristics can always work well.
Recently, my university changed its carriculum from an ordinary lecture-only type to a new lecture and discussion type. I appreciate this change. In a new system, we can learn in our classes as former students did. At the same time, in a discussion class, we can learn with our classmates by telling our own thoghts. Our faculty members knew that they shouldn't completely change the system to a discussion only type. This is because we must gain large amounts of knowledge. In discussion only class, it is clear that we can't get enough knowledge. If we want to get sufficient knowlege, ordinary types of lecture are very effective.
I appreciate the faculty members' great effort of converting the system to a new one. Such efforts can not be ended up in vain. It is sure that we can learn more effectively and thoughtfully in a new system. I believe in a near future, we would be a competent doctor, and know that this new system is truely effective.
