I prefer classes in which students do some of the talking to ones in which lecturers do all the teaching. At my university we have tutorials or practicals where students have chance to talk and the lectures where the teachers talk whole through the classes. The former has advantages in training the students to be critical and to discuss in the classes, and in giving them to chance to present the issues or arguments in public

The first advantage of the classes that students can participate in some of the talking is that they can train themselves to listen to the presenter critically and discuss about the issues. In my tutorials and practicals, we usually have to listen to talk to some students deepening the issues and arguments that are taught in the lectures. In this case, we are required to do the readings beforehand and listen to the presenter critically. Speaking of the detailed of it, after the presentation, we have to raise some questions or point out the mistakes or uncertain points that are made by the presenter, which will all lead to discussion. This make the students gain skills to listen to others critically and analytically, and then form their own views of the issues or understand the subjects appropriately. The discussions can also provide students with opportunities to deepen their thoughts and ideas, and to improve their skills to express themselves in public.

Another advantage of the participation of the students in some talk of the classes lies on the side of presenters. Firstly, when you have to do any talk, whether it is a formal or informal presentation, you have to be prepared to present the matter clearly so that everyone in the class can understand you. To do this, you have to make sure that you keep up with the lectures and that you spend extra time on some more readings and organising your ideas. This obviously requires us more work, thus we have no choice but study harder. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, when we do a talk in classes meaning that you gain experience in doing a presentation in public, we have to try to make ourselves calm and assertive so that you can be convincing. To many people, experience is necessary to manage to do the presentation well without feeling any nervous or too excited, thus the talk in the class is the great opportunity to get used to this situation. It is very important for us to gain skills in presentation, which is one of the keys of success after we start working.

In conclusion, the classes with some talk of the students are more preferable than the other, for the students can train themselves to be critical and to discuss and for they can gain experience in having a presentation in public.
