We have
experienced dramatic changes in terms of politics, technology, and society
and in this century, this tendency will continue. Among various changes we
can expect in this century, what is brought by the advanced research of
gene is one of the most predictable and remarkable changes.
Technology of gene recombination brought by the study of genetics might
solve the problems of lack of food. Genetic engineering research specifies
the strong genes that rice and cattle have. Therefore, we can breed the
strong crops and livestock. If the technique is advanced so that we can
get rid of genes that cause diseases and chose crops and domestic animals
having only strong to be raised, our productivity will drastically
increase. Therefore, we will be able to gain enough food at the least cost
and we can figure out food shortage in the world by the development of
crops which is very strong against draught or cold climate.
Genetic engineering technology might be able to prepare necessary organs
for patients waiting for donors. Recently, I have heard that clone
technique, adaptation of genetic research have possibility to make
artificial organs to transplant from pig. Now, insufficient donors leave
large number of patients dying waiting for organ transplant. This
technique, however, might give perfect organs functioning like human's
organs for patients who cannot find donors of necessary organs. Although
we have still have difficult problems like rejection, within the century,
I am sure of success of producing artificial organs, thinking about our
previous rapid development of technology.
In this way, we will continue to develop technology which will save our
lives and especially, the development of genetic research will save lots
of people. I think this is the most remarkable change in this century.
