Indonesian police urged to speed up probe into activist's death
Indonesian activists have called on police to speed up investigations into the death
last year of prominent Indonesian human rights campaigner, Munir.
They say the probe is proceeding much too slowly with still no suspects found five
months after he was poisoned on a plane travelling from Jakarta to Amsterdam.
Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara, of the National Commission on Human Rights, says
it is crucial the government gets to the bottom of the case as Munir's death is not a
simple criminal action.
He says the activist, who was a driving force behind a probe which exposed military
involvement in human rights violations during East Timor's 1999 vote for independence,
had made many enemies in the course of his work.
The commission has sent a letter to the national police chief about progress of the
investigation, but has not yet received any response.
