Indonesian prosecutors demand eight years jail for Bashir
Indonesian prosecutors have asked a court to sentence the Islamic cleric, Abu Bakar
Bashir, to eight years jail on terrorism charges.
The prosecution could have demanded the death penalty, if Bashir is found guilty.
Bashir, 66, is on trial for inciting followers to stage a bomb attack on the island of Bali
in 2002 and an attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003.
The bombings killed a total of 214 people.
Prosecutor, Salman Maryadi, has told a Jakarta court that evidence clearly shows
Bashir is guilty of being involved in acts of terrorism that had led to the endangering or
loss of lives.
Mr Maryadi says that although Bashir was not at the locations of the attacks in Bali
and Jakarta, he was aware of the plans and did not stop the perpetrators from carrying
out the bombings.
The cleric has repeatedly denied the charges.
His trial began in October and the defence still has to present its side of the case
before the court reaches a verdict.
