Two Kisar Island Youths To Attend Training Course In Netherlands

Jakarta ( Berita ) : Two Indonesian youths from Kisar island, Southwest Maluku district, are leaving Jakarta for the Netherlands on Tuesday to undergo a three-month intensive training course on solar energy development and groundwater resources management in Delft.

Hendrik Laudiun and Johanis Ratumali, the two youths from Oirata village in Kisar, were invited by TitanE Foundation in the Netherlands to participate in the course at one of the colleges in Delft, one of the best-preserved towns in the country and birthplace of 17th-century Dutch painter Jqan Vermeer.

"The round trip ticket , accommodation and living allowance during the course will be borne by the foundation," Hendrik said Monday morning in Bekasi, some 30 kms east of here.

Asked at which college they would be given the training, Johanis, the other youth, said: "We are not certain, for everything will be taken care of by the foundation."

Both Johanis and Hendrik said the Dutch foundation's offer was a golden opportunity that struck them "as thunder."

"Never in all our lives have we dreamed of going to the Netherlands," Hendrik and Johanis said beaming with excitement adding that they would try their best to apply the knowledge they would gain through the training to deevelopment in Kisar island.

Kisar is one of Indonesia's forgotten islands, located off the northeastern tip of East Timor and some 500 miles north of Australia's Northern territory.

Electricity and drinking water scarcity are the major problem of some 20,000 people of the 19 villages on that rocky and barren island of Kisar.

In the course in Delft, Hendrik and Johanis are expected to gain theoritical background and practical expertise in the field of solar energy development and groundwater extraction and treatment.

According to Hendrik, the objectives of the training are to provide the participants with an understanding of the theory of groundwater flow, including geohydrological examination and development of water wells.(ant)
