Maluku Governor leads large delegation to meet President in
Jakarta
Ambon, Maluku ( Berita ) : Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu and a large group
of provincial government officials and public figures left here for Jakarta on Thursday to
meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, local goverment spokesman Said
Assagaf said here Friday.
Assagaf said President Yudhoyono through Minister/State Secretary Yusril Ihza
Mahendra had expressed readiness to receive the Maluku governor and his entourage.
During the meeting with Yudhoyono, according to Assagaf, the governor would inform
the president about his administration's plan to celebrate Maluku province's
anniversary on August 19.
"Governor Ralahalu will invite the President to attend the anniversary celebrations,"
Assagaf said, adding that on the occasion, Ralahalu and his entourage would also
discuss security issues in the province in anticipation of the anniversary of the
separatist South Maluku Republic (RMS) next April 25.
Violence erupted in Maluku's provincial cap[ital of Ambon on April 25 last year after
police arrested Moses Tuannakota, secretary general of the banned separatist South
Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) , who previously chaired a meeting to mark the 54th
RMS anniversary.
The arrest was followed by a clash between RMS supporters and anti-separatist
residents that left more than 25 people dead, 80 others wounded and 200 homes
burned down. (ant)
