Southeast Maluku police to launch operation ahead of RMS
anniversary
Tual, Maluku ( Berita ) : Local police are to launch a securtiy operation in this district
ahead of the 55th anniversary of the outlawed RMS (Republic of South Maluku)
movement, a spokesman said.
Southeast Maluku District Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner JA Timisela
said here Wednesday the operation would be staged to anticipate the possibility of
elements of the separatist group provoking clashes among the community in the
runup to their anniversary on April 25.
Although so far the district had been free of RMS activity, the possibility that RMS
elements had infiltrated the local community should always be taken into account, he
said.
Commenting on reports that RMS figure Umar Sani had been staying in the region for
the past few days, Timisela said an investigation had proven the reports to be untrue.
However, police had assigned officers in the field to monitor possible separatist
activity and ensure public security in the district.
He also called on the local people to reamin alert and not to be easily provoked by
misleading issues floated by irresponsible parties intending to create national
instability. (ant)
