U.S. issues travel warning on Indonesia
WASHINGTON (AFP): The United States on Thursday warned its citizens against
travel to Indonesia because of potential terrorism.
"The terrorist threat in Indonesia remains high," the State Department said in a
statement.
The United States advised against non-essential travel, and urged its citizens who
decided to travel anyway to "observe vigilant personal security precautions and to
remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans, U.S.
or other Western interests in Indonesia."
"Attacks could occur at any time and could be directed against any location,
including those frequented by foreigners," the State Department said.
"Such targets could include but are not limited to places where Americans and other
Westerners live, congregate, shop or visit, including hotels, clubs, restaurants,
shopping centers, identifiably Western businesses, housing compounds,
transportation systems, places of worship, schools or public recreation events.
"Reports suggest attacks could include targeting individual American citizens."
The warning cited "recent arrests of terrorists with explosives in the Philippines,
including an Indonesian Jamaah Islamiyah member, who were planning to commit
terrorist attacks there suggest that the threat of similar attacks by JI against targets
in Indonesia continues." (**)
