Dr. Daniel David Palmer discovered Chiropractic in 1895 while practising as a magnetic healer, in Davenport, Iowa, USA. Since that time the field has blossomed to be practised and accepted in almost every country on the globe, with most countries registering practitioners.
In Australia, Chiropractic has been practised since the very early years of the 20th. century. It is now registered by relevant Health Departments in all States and Territories.
Chiropractors are recognized as medical experts in their field by statutory bodies and State and Federal Government departments.
Ever lift a paving brick? No-one ever got hurt lifting a paving brick. Ever move 1000 paving bricks? Everyone aches after that! Why? The paver didn't get heavier. But your muscles got tired. Muscles don't just move different parts of you, they also hold different parts together. If they get too tired to hold your parts in the right place, minor movements can cause your joints to move too far because your muscles aren't able to prevent it. That is the most common cause of back problems. The Chiropractor has two initial aims when he or she accepts you as a patient, but one main goal. The first aim is to get you comfortable. If you didn't hurt you wouldn't have looked us up, would you? This is called Symptom Relief. Chiropractic is probably THE most effective procedure for rapidly resolving back discomfort. O.K. So I feel better. Thanks. Goodbye.
The second aim is to stabilize the area that you hurt. Why? So you don't hurt it again! I'll bet that you can name a dozen people who have a 'bad back' and it goes away and then it comes back and it goes away and then it comes back and it go.............. How come? When your joints went past their normal limits because of physical stress, they made little ligaments stretch. These ligaments are called 'Check ligaments". Check? They check excess movement. Now yours don't. You need to keep the injured area working properly while these ligaments catch up. Just because it doesn't hurt anymore doesn't mean it's healed. It just means it's relieved. Relief is great because it means you don't have to hurt while the next bit happens. Stabilization.
STABILIZATION is pretty straight forward if you think about what we just said about the Check ligaments. Until the ligaments catch up with the rest of you, the only thing holding your injured joints in place is their inherent shape, and that isn't a very calming thought. The bones of your spine have joints that mechanically look great on paper, inclined planes, interlocking facets, flat face to flat face. These joints are bullet-proof. Wait a while.
When you first got hurt, your brain told your body to relieve the discomfort any way that it could. Twisted ankle? Limp. Strained shoulder? Use the other arm. Hit your thumb with a hammer? First say stuff that isn't in the dictionary and then protect the sore bit. Compensation following back problems leads to an interesting condition. And that's the main goal. Relief + Stabilization=FIXED!
Chiropractic is GREAT at making my body feel better. What else can it do?

But you only crack backs, don't you?
No, we don't. Calling a Chiropractor a back-cracker is a bit like calling a carpenter a hammer-swinger. Yes, he swings a hammer, but it is only a tool he uses to accomplish an aim. Some Chiropractic techniques use physical manipulation of spinal joints to produce skeletal, muscular and neurological or nervous system changes. Some techniques don't. Some procedures produce a cracking sound. Some procedures don't. Regardless of whether there is a sound or physical exertion or just mild pressure, the aim of the whole procedure is to remove impediments to your well-being.
So what does that do?
All of us during our lives subject our bodies to mechanical stresses. Washing the car. Weeding the garden. Throwing the Frisbee for the dog. Laying new lawn. None of these are neccessarily hard work, but if some actions are repeated too much, or some activities are a bit too strenuous, physical problems can be caused that produce pain, either immediately, or sometimes, months or years down the track.
Until you move.
Then the inclined planes don't incline at the same angle, the interlocking facets don't interlock and the flat faces don't sit flat on the faces above or below.
That's where your ligaments come into play. They stop joints moving too far. But you hurt yours. They don't stop joints moving too far.
You don't hurt?
Protect. Protect. Protect.
In Chiropractic and in most medical fields, protection is called Compensation. Your brain makes your body compensate to protect it from further aggravating the injury.
Posture Change .
If your body is having to compensate around a mechanical problem it can't work efficiently. This shows up as changes in Posture. Changes in Posture lead to mechanical stresses all over your system, and the next thing you know you have bits and pieces complaining all over the place. How to prevent all of this following injury? Stabilize. What the Chiropractor does is to keep your involved joints and muscles working properly while your body re-adapts to being fixed. That way you heal straight instead of adapt to your compensations. Don't think that because it doesn't hurt it doesn't matter. Pain is a final warning of physical trouble. Think of it as the red light on the dash-board of your car. The HOT light doesn't come on when the radiator has lost a cup-full. It comes on when damage is imminent, or already done. Waiting for the light to come on will inevitably cause BIG problems with your engine. Same with your body. Pain is the LAST warning mechanism, not the first. Don't get it relieved, get it FIXED!
