Item Burton's Double Seamer

The Double Seaming Machine is used to finish the bottom seam on a vessel. Some Double Machines were available with a Setting Down Attachment which made the Setting Down Machine unnecessary. If the machine was furnished with the Setting Down Attachment, an additional head was furnished for the horizontal shaft which was to be used in the setting down operation only.

The Stow's Patent machine pictured above does not have the Setting Down Attachment (although it could have originally been furnished with it) and I believe it to be a No. 15 machine because of the 20” height. Pressure from the head on the horizontal shaft assembly is accomplished by means of a foot treadle on this particular machine.

Multiple sized discs, for flaring and straight work were furnished with these machines and the appropriate size, flanged or straight (as the vessel being formed determines) disc was placed on the vertical shaft, the vessel is placed over the disc, and the disc standard is moved toward the head to the point where when the foot treadle is depressed, the head comes into contact with the vessel and by turning the crank, the seam is turned down and flat against the side of the vessel, whereby completing the vessel bottom seam. Can you believe this used to be done on a Double Seaming Stake?
