The Grooving Machine is designed to replace the Hand Groover for finishing the Groove Seam. These machines were furnished with three or more widths of the Grooving Rolls to accommodate various finished widths of Groove Seams. The 18th Century PS&W Machines were furnished with 1/8”, 5/32” and 7/32” rolls. Niagara advertised theirs as having 5/32”, 3/16” and ¼” rolls furnished.

The forming of the seam on the body of a can consists of allowing additional material for the seam equal to 3x the desired finished seam width, ie: 3 x ¼” = ¾”seam allowance. ¼” of the material is bent 180 degrees on each end of the body, in opposite directions, using the Folding Machine. The body is formed to the desired cylinder using the Forming Machine (Rolls) and the two ends are hooked together. The seam of the body is then placed on the horn of the Grooving Machine and the Grooving roll passes over the seam, grooving it. This process as opposed to the Hand Groover leaves a much more appealing finished seam being uniform and free of imperfections. I am particularly fond of the 1/8” seam.
