Doctor Who is a science fiction television program produced in the
UK by BBC. It is currently the longest running science fiction program
ever, running from 1963 until 1989. 2003 will mark its 40th anniversary
(that's a long time for a TV show).
I first discovered Doctor Who when I was about ten years old and
dialing through the channels (this was pre-remote era). Being a ten
year old I automatically fell in love with the science fiction theme
and began watching it faithfully. As the years passed and the stories
continued I became a greater and greater fan of the series. In 1998
I took off from my midterms at school to attend my one and only convention.
Was it worth it? Absolutely, what's a year of school anyway...
I think the greatest appeal of the show is its genuine feel to the
characters. The Doctor was not a super hero or giant robot, he didn't
chase women, drink, smoke or lie. Although he was technically an alien
I suppose, he was more so a man, with morals, a sense of responsibility
and always a rather child like quality to his personality. No matter
which actor portrayed him, these qualities always seemed to be present,
though each Doctor was most certainly, unique.
Watching Doctor Who recently, my roommate asked what I could possibly
like about a show with such awful special effects? Why not watch something
"good" ?
My reply? "Nothing I have seen in 20 years has even come close
to the general quality of Doctor Who".
