Hitomi and the others run up to it. Hitomi: Van! Snap out of it, Van! Millerna: What's wrong Hitomi? Hitomi: Van's in danger! Van, open your eyes! Van... //A black smoke rises out of Escaflowne's cockpit. //Hitomi grabs on to Escaflowne's face mask. Hitomi: Van, wake up! Millerna: Stop! You may not be able to return, just like what happened with the Deceptant! Allen: Hitomi! Hitomi: If we leave him, Van will... ...Van'll be gone! //Hitomi's arms slip into Escaflowne. Millerna: Don't! //Escaflowne's energist goes out. The smoke stops going out of Escaflowne. Hitomi lays silent. Millerna: Hitomi... ----------------- The Lost Paradise ----------------- //Hitomi runs through a landscape of fog. Nothing visible can be seen around her. Hitomi: Van, where are you? //A large crowd of marching people, gray in color appear in the horizon. Among those in the crowd are the recently slayed Dragonslayers. Hitomi runs through the crowd. //We see Van in the crowd. Hitomi: Van! Van, wait! //Hitomi reaches Van, put her hand passes right through him and he vanishes. Hitomi: Van! //Back in the real world, Millerna checks for Hitomi's pulse. Millerna: It stopped. //Hitomi awakens, with winged people flying over her. It is a peaceful, roman like landscape. Hitomi: This can't be heaven, can it? //Hitomi stands on a nearby balcony as a winged person flies by. She looks over, a few hundred feet from her and sees a cliff, with a lone tree on it. Van sits below it. Hitomi runs through the city attempting to get there. She eventually reaches it. Van kneels, with his head lowered behind his knees. Hitomi: Van, lets go home. Everyone's waiting. //Van doesn't respond. He just continues to sit there, shaking nervously. Hitomi: Van...? //A sudden shaking knocks Hitomi to the ground. The landscape turns a bright red and a fire spreads thoughout the city. The winged people are roasted alive. The buildings collapse. Hitomi: What the...? //The ground starts collapsing. Hitomi grabs Van. Hitomi: Van! Snap out of it, Van! //The cliff starts cracking around them. Allen: Three minutes have passed. Millerna: We've got to recover Hitomi, at least. Merle: No! //Merle jumps atop Escaflowne. Merle: Hey, you stupid girl! Don't give up! //Merle shakes Hitomi. Merle: Make sure you bring Master Van back with you! Hey, are you listening? //Merle slaps Hitomi. Merle: Master Van! //Hitomi hears Merle. Hitomi: Merle...? Merle: Master Van, come back! //A pillar of light appears from the tree and surrounds Hitomi and Van. Hitomi: Merle...?! //The entire cliff collapses and falls into the growing pool of lava. Van is unresponsive as he and Hitomi fall into it. Hitomi: Van! Van, fly! Van! //As the tree collapses into the lava, Van's wings burst out of his back. They fly up away from it. Back in the real world, Hitomi's hands slip off of Escaflowne. The energist glows and Escaflowne's normal color returns. Escaflowne's cockpit opens and Van slowly crawls out. Hitomi awakens with Merle on top of her. Crowd: He's alive! Merle: Master Van... //Hitomi clutches her bruised face in pain. Hitomi: Merle... That was your doing. Thank you! //Hitomi hugs Merle. Van stares blankly into the sky. Meanwhile, on the Floating Fortress... Dilandau: They were all incompetents. Guimel, Dallet, Shester, Gatty, Violle... You won't be recognized if you die in battle like that. //Dilandau flicks the rose he was holding over the edge of the fortress. //He has a sudden vision of a girl crying. Girl: Don't leave me alone! Don't leave me alone! //Dilandau falls to his knees. Dilandau: Alone... //Dilandau collapses. Dornkirk: Since the Freid Dukedom has been conquered, the power spot is in our hands. However... Folken: About the dragon, right? Dornkirk: Exactly. The fate of the dragon is covered in a mist, and is barely visible. Folken: Leave it to me. I've already made the next move. Dornkirk: Capture the dragon! //Meanwhile, on Dryden's ship, which is hiding between 2 cliffs, Van holds up his sword. His hands shakes. He remembers the Dragonslayer's screams of death. Van collapses. He looks at his sword. Van: Why? Why does my hand shake when I hold a sword? Hitomi: Van... //Allen walks up to her. Hitomi: Allen... Allen: You don't have to worry about Van. Hitomi: But he's been like that since then. Allen: It's an ordeal which swordsmen have to overcome. I had the same experience. Conceit and arrogance draw you into a mist of fear. //Allen flashes back to an encounter in the woods from years before. Knight: Is it you who's been picking fights with swordsmen recently? Young Allen: If you're scared of fighting... ...leave all your money and I'll spare your life. Knight: You seem to have some background. What's your name? Young Allen: Allen Schezar. C'mon! //Allen attacks him. The knight knocks him to the ground with ease. Knight: You have good aptitude, but your conceited swordsplay will never shine. Young Allen: Kill me! //We finally see the Knight's face. It is revealed to be Vargas. Vargas: Why are you in a hurry to die? Young Allen: I have no family or house. The sword is everything! I can't live in disgrace once I've lost! Vargas: In swordplay, power and technique aren't important. The key lies within you. Train yourself. Allen: That was how I met my master, Vargas. He enlightened me when I was dissolute. Mastering the sword means training oneself. But I haven't come close to my master, I... Hitomi: That's not true. You're brilliant, strong and compassionate. I... I... I don't know anything about the sword, and he probably won't listen to me... ...but if it's you, he will. Because you're wonderful, and everyone trusts you. And I like you, too. //Hitomi realizes what she's just said. Hitomi: Take care of Van, okay? //Hitomi runs away. Allen: "Like," huh? Sometimes I see a demon in you, Hitomi. -------- Eyecatch -------- //Dryden is in his library. Dryden: The mysterious power of Hitomi, who came from the Phantom Moon... Van, a descendant of the Dragon Clan... ...Escaflowne... And Zaibach, which is after the power spot... Mysterious incidents that take place one after another... It's so frustrating. Something's coming to my mind. Millerna: Dryden... thank you. Dryden: For what? I don't need your smooth words. It doesn't cost you a bit to bow. Millerna: Your way of saying... I had reconsidered about you, and I was going to apologize for my lack of manners. Dryden: (laughs) That's it. Thats more like you. My mind's full of dirty thoughts. I'll do anything to get your attention. Millerna: But... I... Dryden: Allen? I don't care. I get everything I want. Well, it's alright. Instead... ...I want you to do me a favor. //They go see Allen. Allen: It's my father's final log, from his study. Dryden: Oh, this is it! Millerna: Is that really useful? Dryden: Sure it is. This might solve all the mysteries surrounding you. Allen: Mysteries...? Dryden: It's Atlantis. Millerna: Atlantis...? Dryden: My father often told me your father was after the secret treasure of Atlantis. Let me borrow this for a while. Dryden leaves. Allen: What a notorious man he was. He disgraced me, even in a frontier like this. Millerna: It's insignificant compared to the price he paid to repair Escaflowne. Allen: That's right. //Meanwhile, Hitomi leans on a windowsill, depressed. Hitomi: Geez, why did I say that? I'm like a fickle girl. //Millerna walks up to her. Millerna: Hitomi... Hitomi: Millerna. Millerna: I want your opinion about my friend. Hitomi: Sure. //Merle is listening in. Millerna: She has a boyfriend. He's a playboy, and she found out that he has a secret child. Hitomi: Disgusting. Millerna: Listen until I'm finished. Hitomi: Okay. Millerna: But another guy, who seems to be rich and kind... ...came to her and said he loved her. Merle: It's so obvious, that idiot. Hitomi: And...? Millerna: What do you think she should do? Hitomi: What she should... If I found out I was hanging around with him when he'd had a child, I'd never talk to him. Millerna: Why not? Hitomi: He doesn't deserve to be a man. He sounds like he approaches any woman. Millerna: But he's wonderful. Hitomi: The other guy isn't? Millerna: Looks are okay... Hitomi: And he has love and a financial background, doesn't he? Then, he's the right one. Millerna: It sounds so calculating. Hitomi: What about going steady with both, like him? Millerna: How immoral. Hitomi: What about giving up on both... ...and becoming a tragic heroine? Millerna: No way. You talk as if you don't care about me... I mean my friend. What about the feelings she has? Hitomi: That's the point after all. In any case, it's natural to follow one's own feelings. Millerna: Own feelings... Hitomi: Should I read their fortunes? To find which one is most suitable for her. I'm usually right, if it's about someone else. Merle: Are you stupid? What's with that fortune telling bit? Before you read someone else's fortune, why don't you make up your own mind? Hitomi: My mind...? Merle: Which one do you love, Master Van or Allen? //Millerna looks pretty shocked. Mole Man walks up the stairs and looks in shock. He walks back down the stairs quickly. Merle: Which one?! Hitomi: The one I love is... Allen. I just worry about Van. (thinking) Worry...? Is that all? Merle: Then, don't get close to Master Van. Millerna: Allen is out of your reach. Hitomi: I don't know. //Meanwhile, 2 cat women sit atop their Guymelefs nearby as the ship passes by. Naria: Sis, that's the one, isn't it? Eriya: How fortunate to find it in a place like this. Naria: He said that was our kind of luck. Eriya: Let's give them a greeting, and make it a gift for Master Folken. Naria: Nice idea. //They get in their Guymelefs. And jump down onto the ship. Crewman: ...and my wife found it. Crewman2: Bad luck. //The ship shakes as the Guymelefs land. Naria: There's a Guymelef called Escaflowne, isn't there? Eriya: Hurry and give it to us. If you disobey... ...you're all gonna die. //Reeden rushes to the bridge. Reeden: Boss, it's Zaibach! Zaibach's Guymelefs are... Gadeth: What? Merle: Master Van! Hitomi: Van! Don't you haven't recovered! Merle: Master Van! Van: Alright! //Escaflowne transforms into Dragon mode. Allen: Van's come out. Eriya: It came out. Naria: Let's finish it quickly. //They fly after Escaflowne. The jump atop it and grab on its wings. Escaflowne crashes onto the Crusade and reverts to its normal mode. Naria jumps atop him and scratches Escaflowne's face mask. Van's face starts bleeding. Eriya knocks him to the ground. Van swings his sword at her, but she grabs his arms to stop him. Van: A woman...?! Eriya: The torso is unguarded. //She hits him there. Escaflowne knocks her over and holds it's sword to her head, but Naria attacks him from behind. Van starts shaking again and thinks about the Dragonslayer's deaths again. Eriya: What's wrong with him? Naria: He seems to be scared. Dilandau was defeated by a guy like him? Eriya: No wonder Master Folken's worried. Let's finish it. //Merle runs in front of Escaflowne. Naria and Eriya look in shock. They flash back to when they were children. One of them protected the other from a crowd. Crowd: You can't escape. Obey us. Merle: I won't let you kill... I won't let you kill Master Van! Van: Merle...! Eriya: She ruined the mood. Naria: She did, but it's a cat... That's enough for today. //They take off. Van gets out of Escaflowne. Van: Merle! Merle. Merle: Master Van... Master Van, I'm glad. I'm so glad you're safe... Master Van! Van: Merle... Hitomi: Merle... //Dryden is reading Allen's book and laughs. Dryden: I found it. I found it! As I thought, all the mysteries lie in the Mystic Valley. //Van, Merle and Hitomi lean on the window sill Hitomi was at earlier. Hitomi: Mystic Valley...? Van: It's the legendary place of the Dragon Clan. To Be Continued... ------- Credits -------
