文献検索 Carl UnCover について
こちらの図書館情報に基づいて Carl UnCover へアクセスしてみました。
無料（食い逃げ）で paper, article の検索ができ、研究用に十分使えます。
Carl UnCover は１万タイトル以上を有する世界最大の雑誌記事データベース
です。
WWW は www.carl.org/carl.html
telnet は database.carl.org
です。telnetでつながった最初の画面の端末指定は 5. VT100
で、あとはCRの連続でいけます。ただし、応答は遅いです。
本来は、paperのFaxサービスで、欲しいものがみつかれば
有料で送ってもらえます。

UnCoverは、医学はもとよりあらゆるジャンルの雑誌17000種が登録されている
専門データベースです。日頃利用しているMEDLINEと違い、このデータベースには
抄録が存在しません。ですから、検索も著者名、雑誌名、発行年月日、および
「タイトル中に」現れるキーワードに限定されます。しかしながら、抄録登録や
MeSHターム（MEdical Subject Headings: 手短に言えば検索キー）登録に要する
手間がない分、データベースの更新は速く、CurrentContentsのインターネット版
といった感じで利用できます。電子情報のおかげでタイムラグは遅くとも１週間
以内、雑誌によっては発刊前に目次情報がオープンされることもあるため、現存する
雑誌データベースの中では最速の部類に入るのではないかと思います。
検索の結果、目的の文献がヒットすればFAXもしくは郵送で発注する
ことができます。この料金が大体１件につき２０ドル前後です。
米国の懐の広さと言いますか、驚くことに検索サービス自体は無料のため
日本から利用していた人も多いようです。欠点は先ほども述べた通り、キーワード
検索はタイトル中に現れる言葉に限られること、および反応が遅いこと、
この２点です。
さて、私自身は通常の文献検索には PaperChase を使い、時々 UnCover で
最新雑誌を検索するというスタイルでいたのですが、慣れとは恐ろしいもので
「新着雑誌の目次データを自動的に受け取れたらどうだろう。
毎週定期的に目的のキーワードを検索して、ヒットする文献があれば
電子メールで送ってくれる夢のようなサービスがあればいいのに。」と
欲求はとどまる所を知りません。実際、前者の目次サービスについては
がんセンターで実現しているという話を聞き、色々と調べてみました。
ひとつの有力な候補として、FirstSearch の目次情報サービスが挙がりました。
FirstSearch はご存じの方もいらっしゃるかと思いますが、米国OCLC社が
経営する世界最大の複合検索サービスです。日本では代理店である紀ノ国屋書店が
今春無料体験キャンペーンを行い、話題を呼びました。紀ノ国屋の担当者に
聞くとこの秋から１雑誌数千円／年で新着雑誌の目次データを電子メールで送信する
サービスを開始するというのです。この値段ですと、年間１０万円の予算が
あれば数十の雑誌を登録できるため、契約をすすめるべく準備を始めました。
しかし、もう少し調べていますと普段使っていた UnCover で新しく
UnCover Reveal というサービスが開始されたことを知りました。
これは年間２０ドルで契約すると、最大５０件の雑誌目次情報および
最大２０キーワードの週１回の自動検索結果を電子メールで送付してくれる
という驚くべき内容でした。もちろん、その場で契約を行い翌週からは
夢に見ていた環境が実現しました。具体的なメールを一部抜粋します。

CARL には telnet database.carl.org で接続できますので、この中から
UnCover を選択します。最初に色々と聞いてきますが、リターンキーのみ
で答えて行けば無料検索サービスが始まります。

（接続すれば簡単に表示できますが、とにかく反応が遅いので全てのファイルを
