The people of the Khabarovsk Krai have a strong desire to develop and strengthen international relations with the different countries of the world. Foreign partners display their interest in mutual cooperation in the economy, in the culture, in education and through sports.
The exchange of official and business delegations is growing annually. Joint scientific and practical meetings, conferences and symposiums are held. Projects for international economic cooperation are developing and are becoming a reality. Recently, the Khabarovsk Krai has established direct ties with some regions of neighboring countries, specifically the State of Alaska (the USA) and Hyogo Prefecture (Japan), which facilitates the mutual understanding between the people of these countries, and forms a solid basis for development of economic ties.
Agreements on economic cooperation have been signed with the Chinese Heilongjiang and Liaoning Provinces, and the Japanese Aomori and Akita Prefectures, as well as with the Southern Kyonsan (Republic of Korea) and Haihing (Vietnam) Provinces. These agreements contribute to the expansion of mutually beneficial relations in such spheres as trade, manufacturing of consumer goods, natural resources processing, agriculture and fish industry, scientific and technological cooperation, communication and environmental protection.
The long term programs on the economic cooperation of the Far Eastern regions of the Russian Federation and the Hokkaido Island in Japan are being successfully implemented, including regional projects between the Khabarovsk Krai and Hokkaido in trade, transport, agriculture, fish industry, timber industry and forestry, in infrastructure, tourism and communication. The program envisions a broad exchange of goods, technologies and scientific and technical information.
In 1994 the Representation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation was opened in Khabarovsk. Today, over 40 foreign companies of Japan, China, the USA, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand have opened their representative offices in the Khabarovsk Krai in order to expand their activity.
