The heat was the kind that made your shirt stick to your skin. You could have friend
an egg on the sidewalk at 10 in the morning, but within the hospital everything was
cool...but not for long.
Boredom seemed to overtake the petite figure of Joy. Her long flowing hair cascading
down her back and causing slight vertigo to the interns with her pink stripped dress. She
drew a small red lollipop from her pocket, and began to quench her outrageous hunger.
She had to skip lunch today because she was broke. Then with the lollipop stuck in her
mouth she began to sort files. This person had just died, this one had just registered, and
this one had cancer now.
Suddenly the door to the hospital slid open admitting a warm gust of air, and in the
glare of the sun one tall figure stood in the door way. Muscles that rippled through the lab
coat. He was an angel, a savior to these poor girls, always surrounded by old men or zit
riddled teenagers.
The door slid close and then you could see this man in full detail. Deep blue eyes,
they were what the sky wished to be. Joy slowly let the file slide from her fingers into the
cabinet. He had a confident walk, and strode straight to the front desk.
"Hello, my name is Patrick, I am the new cardiologist, what is your name "he chimed
like a fairy, and his voice tamed these savage women into quiet submittal. Only Joy had
enough in her to answer
"M-m-m-m-y name is, uhm-ohhh, er hmm, uh, JOY! yeah that's it"
It was clear to him that she a little nervous. He tried to calm her
"what a pretty name, can you tell me which office is mine?"
"uhmm it is, uhmm, ugh! ahhh it is here!" she fumbled through the papers on the
desk, when suddenly Patrick grabbed her hand and slowly led it to a small pink piece of
paper that said '201' on it.
"I think this is the room" and with a wink he disappeared.
The next day Joy found a single red rose on her desk. The card attached said
"so you can find room number 201 next time-Patrick"
She floated on cloud nine and hardly noticed that she drifted to room 201 and slid a
red lollipop under the door.
After awhile Patrick noticed, that Joy hardly ever ate lunch, she was always broke or
had forgotten her money. One Tuesday afternoon he left a note on her desk, this time with
a tulip of blue
"meet me outside on the front lawn at 12:15-your Patrick"
He had a beautiful lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches packed from the
cafeteria. Joy was truly living up to her name. Patrick had just brought out the chocolate
cake when the ants came. The two were completely surrounded. The hero that Patrick
was, he picked up Joy with in his arms and carried her inside, and balanced the chocolate
on his head. It was then that she knew she was in love.
One day, near the end of the summer, Joy found not the usual one, but a full dozen
roses on her desk. This time the note attached said
"Please visit me in room 201 at 5:05 this afternoon-love Patrick"
It took forever for the time to roll around. All the files were sorted and were not only
alphabetical but also color coded. Messages were delivered straight to the person so that
they didn't have to come to the desk. The last five minutes took an eternity. Finally it was
time.
She hurried down the hall, and was almost in a full run by the time she reached the
room. She lightly knocked on the door, and heard a cheerful
"come in, and close the door after you, Joy."
She slid in, and sitting on the examining table was Patrick with another dozen roses.
He made a small jump down, got on one knee and presented the flowers to Joy. He stood
up and whispered.
"Joy, I love you, and I have always wanted to do this"
And with that he gathered her up in his arms and gave her the most passionate kiss that
was ever possible. They were locked for what seemed like forever. She gazed deep into
his sea eyes and everything and nothing was said. They shared every intimate thought in a matter of seconds. It was then they knew it was true love.
With a jump Joy raised her head as someone dropped a 2 foot pile of files in front of
her. Yet another day dream. Just then Patrick walked by, took a quick glance into her
eyes, gave her a wink, and dropped a single rose at her feet that said
"so you can find room number 201 next time-Patrick".
