This is by far the best goldfish site I've seen so far. You have beautiful Ranchus. I think the main reason that some people are ignorant about goldfish is the fact that a few pet stores (but a lot are great) dont give out much useful information. I went to a huge chain to buy my fish, and they didn't sell nets and they knew nothing about goldfish.

Hi! I like your website. It is the first goldfish website I have ever been to/on. I currently have four goldfish. One black moore and three red capped oranda's. I bought them when small and raised them to a pretty big size. I have had them for about three years. The oranda's have big red tops! and all the fish are in great health. I house the four fish in a medium sized Kiddy pool and use some modified aqua clear filters. I think the fish love the pool's roundness, space and surface water size. Bye!

Hi! Thoroughly enjoyed this site, the best one I've seen so far. I especially like your answers to stupid questions! Keep up the good work. I'm sure I'll visit your site again and again. I purchased several "feeder fish" from a pet store back in September '98, in a practice of Feng Shui. Placing the tank on the west wall. Little did I know how satisfying it is to live with gold fish. I started with 6 (I know), gave them all names. But Fatima died from being brutally attacked by Napoleon (maybe in mating?). And Napoleon died of remorse and guilt (just kidding). So now there's Anthony and Cleopatra and Claudius and Andy Cap (for his red head). I've gone from a 10 gallon to a 20 and ho e to have them in a 30 or larger in the near future. They're tank is decorated naturally. They are my buddies. When Fatima died I cried. I even wrote an English paper on them and got an A. Well, thanks again. Zebra Deun

What a wonderful site! You have put out so much useful information, in easy to understand formats. Not to mention that it's a treat for the eyes as well. I've just got my first 2 as a beginner fish to learn how to keep an aquarium, but then I learned t at they were an interesting species in themselves - the fish ( I call them the 2 little piggies ) are really beautiful and curious. Thank you for providing a very well written source fo information. As a novice goldfish owner, I felt that I had all the right preparation based upon my previous research of the topic, but see a couple of areas in which I can improve my goldfish's home, b sed upon your well written information. My wife named our goldfish Goldie. What can I say? You are right about the personality part. I had tropical fish as a kid, and there wasn't a lot of personality there. Goldie has a real personality. I don't know what fish's hearing is like, but she seems o like it when I play music in that room. Cold be wishful thinking. But she does come to that side of the tank and "watch" when I play the guitar or the piano. Thanks again for such a well laid out and well written site.

Wonderful site! It would be helpful to have a bibliography of goldfishes disease which would include diagnosis and treatment. For example, we had ich, anchor worm, lice, fungus in the 3 months we had our aquarium which test well on ph, ammonia, not crowd d, etc. We suspect that the diseases came with the fish or plants since we did not quarantine. We didn't know better. I would not have bought he fish in the first place if i was able to detect the louse that was on it which then infected other fish in he aquarium. I have a question for you. My goldfish just had a baby tonight. It is very small and i need to know how big of a bowl it needs. For now I have it in a cup. Thanks for this.The info you have provided has been incredibly useful. I was glad to hear that I am not the only one who finds cleaning a Fluval filter a huge pain in the butt. I don't mind the time, but it drives me nuts trying to get the connections to snap" (HAH!) back into place in a dark, hard-to-see-place. Oh well. I arrived at your site because I have been frantic about one gold fish (ryunkin) who has spent the better part of the past few weeks upside down on the bottom of the tank. I have been on frantic search for help and am now pretty sure that it is swim blad er disease. He was a fish I bought in June when the others went out to the pond for the summer. He was never in perfect health I think and I guess I should have know when the other two I bought at the same time also died. Your site is incredible..and so informative. So glad you listed it in the "Goldfish Report." I started with 10 orandas in my fishpond. One by one they died off except for one lonely old guy...about 8". To keep him company I bought 50 feeder goldfish. A year and a half later, 9 have survived and are about 6-9". I have on occasion added a few r nykins and pearlscales. They were attacked by the comets and I have since wanted to add a large oranda to keep my one guy company, but I am afraid of the reception...and at $35-$50 a whack, The risk hasn't seemed worth it. I have recently gotten real serious with the Oranda's, and I've been told there is a breed called Panda Oranda. I'm sure it's hard to find all the differen types of goldfish. Since my gold fish died about fifteen years back, I stopped this hobby. Only recently when I bought 3 Lionheads for my daughter did I take a interest back again. However the 3 Lionheads died the next day and this prompted me to look for knowledge on this obby thru the internet. Very interesting and informative. Now I know why my gold fish died fifteen years ago. I've tried asking at pet shops about occasional floatation problems, and they never seem to know - its been so hard to find more than the most basic info, especially in country towns. A bit hard to compute the gallons to litres, and make sense of some of the equipment referred to - if I havn't seen it and don't know where to find it - like bio-filters ....... Many thanks. I enjoy your pages very much. I have a 10-gal tank with 1 red and white comet. I plan to buy a 55-gal to house 3 fish (Oranda, Ranchu, Moor). I need your advise on selecting filters. I like quiet, easy to maintain, and efficient filters. My questions are: 1) Will 2 AquaClear 300 sufficient for a 55-gal tnak? 2) Will a AquaClear 200 generating too much force for the fish in the 10-gal tank? 3) How does Penguin's filter compare with AquaClear? 4) Will I be happier with the Canister filter based on my preference?(I am very sensitive to noise.) I have about 18 goldfish at the momet...I have learned by trail and error...mostly error... Am very happy to find this web site... I have a problem with some new fish....I rescued them from Pet Smart...they had to many fish and they were in bad shape....They got ich after I got them home and I lost 2 out of ten....then their tails and dorsol fins started to show black...now three are covered with blk areas....Its not like anything I have seen before...The fish are all happy and fins up and eating like pigs...now a forth fish is starting to get black.... Hi. Great home page. Help. One of my 1 year old ryukins is very sick. It all started two weeks ago when she became constipated from overeating (my fault). I stopped feeding her for 4 days. She recovered, but then the next day her nasal flaps turned a dark brown color. Since Sherbet is a reckless swimmer, I figured she injured herself again by skimming the gravel. But the day after that, I discovered the dark brown "smudges" had spread to one side of her body. The pet store told me it sounded like v lvet disease. But doesn't velvet disease cause a gold, dusty film to form all over the fish, not a dark brown spotty appearance? What do I know, I only began keeping fancy goldfish a year ago. Anyway, I took their advice, which was to raise the temperat re slowly to 76F, add 1 tsp Kordon's RID-ICK each day after a 25% water change. I faithfully carried out these instructions for 3 days. Yet, Sherbet isn't getting better. As I write this, she has turned upside down and only turns rightside up with grea effort. She just sits on her tail fin looking upwards. I called the pet store again, and was told to start using penicillin tablets (250 mg tabs). I don't want to use antibiotics because I heard this would upset the biological balance in the tank and erhaps harm the healthy fish. I have a 10 gallon tank, use an Aquaclear 200 power filter, gravel, and plastic plants. The ammonia level is 0 ppm, pH = 7.5, and I just did a 25% water change. I keep the water scrupulously clean. What else can be done t save Sherbet? Thanks! Karen

I need help! I have lethargic fish. I have a 9-day old 10 gallon tank with 4 small goldfish (2 calico, 2 black moor). I have added proper amounts of salt, stress coat, and stress zyme. The ammonia test and nitrite tests are normal. But the fish have sat a the bottom much of the day for the past 5 days. I have done partial water changes the past 3 days. I have a small bio-wheel filter and a small oxygen pump. I don't know what to do. I feel very bad! I am as distressed as the fish are. How much are they hu ting? I became interested in goldfish since we had an outdoor pond at my farm that my grandfather built in the 1940's. We have had fish ever since. Due to our climate, mostly the wilder type fish survive the summer, but we've had some fancy fish survive for y ars. (They are brought in for the winter, Canadian winters are not good for goldfish). I have a celesital eye fish in my tank at home that is not well. It has a bend in it's body and will not swim. I have separated him from the others, but not sure what to do. Any ideas?

I have two ryukins in a 10 gallon tank and would like to add 2-3 lionheads in a few months. Knowing that keeping 5 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank would be inhuman, I have decided to upgrade to at least a 20 gallon tank. However, I'm not sure what would be the best way to do this. Do I need to cycle the new tank while keeping my two goldfish in the old one? Or, can I just transfer the water, gravel, filter, etc., from the old tank to the new, and then add the fish? I really liked your page. It was really helpful. I have quesions though. My fish have bred three times. Two times the fry died. THe third time I gave up and let the parents eat the eggs. THe mom died. THis time two different fishes bred. I have about less than 50 fry left now. I started out with 150. THey will be 4 week old this Friday, but they are only as big as your two week old ones. I feed them powder food store bought. I'm a full time college student. I really need some help for a science prodject i am doing at school. i am a sophmore and needed a project for the science fair. i decided to find out why people say not to use tap water on gold fish or fresh water fish. i am very strongly against animal a use, so i dont want to test acctual fish, but i dnt know how to go about with my experiment. i know that the cause of death must be something like floride or chlorine, but im not sure. i would appreciate any help you could give me in this area. as you can see i am a complete idiot when it comes to fish; but id like to be able to at least save a few by proving that it is nessesary to use fresh water. thank you for reading this, anything you can do will be greatly appreciated. -vicki

I found your site very enjoyable and informative. I could not however, find help with my problem. Our large feeder goldfish began developing black edges on its back fins and a few splotches along the side of its body. There may be a few forming above the eyes. Do you have any ideas? We've put prometh asul in the water and are feeding Tetra Medicated Fish Food. After looking at the pictures in the picture gallery we wondered if perhaps these black areas were not a disease at all but normal coloring. If you have any ideas I would appreciate your comme ts. Thanks.

If possible I need to find a market that sales Moi goldfish. Mine where around 7 years old when they managed to have fry. However a tank leak left me with 3 then 2 died before the tank was repaired (the pet store has been very sad since they where sitti g them). My mother had 12 of the fry in a pond until a new neighbors cat came to dinner and the other 4 given away I haven't spoken to the owners to see if they still exist. So I've been searching the net for a breeder or source for Moi seems they are v ry very hard to come by or might no longer be for sale?
