Bill Watterson just portrays the view of life from a 5 year old like it should be, the humour, the ideas, the crazy imagination. This is just the most realistic comic I've ever read (apart from "Shun Zi's Art of War" but anyway, it's still an amazingly brilliant comic.
The greatest ideas that BW has are the way that Calvin brings everything to life, the way that he pretends to be certain things (mainly dinosaurs) the way he tries to philosify life!
