![]() Saigo Ha Daito-Ryu ( Takeda Ryu ) Aiki Bujutsu is that traditional martial art which can trace it's lineage over the 1200-years of recorded Japanese history as the fighting methods of the Minamoto and Aizu clans which then branched-off from grandmaster Tanomo Saigo through his adopted son, Shiro Saigo and his bodyguard Sokaku Takeda . Saigo Ha Daito-Ryu is not the same branch of the art that evolved through Tanomo Saigo's bodyguard and successor, Sokaku Takeda , although both arts contain the basic techniques taught by Soke Tanomo Saigo known as the " souden " or " core techniques". And no effort to claim ties to that branch is inferred in this homepage. ( Both branches are simply separate divisions or parts of the overall traditional art of the Minamoto and Aizu clans, both being of equal status and authenticity. ) Tanomo Saigo taught his adopted son Shiro Saigo the traditional art of the Minamoto and Aizu clans and groomed him as his official successor . ( This included all the secret aspects of this art including the religious and cultural operations of the system ) , but, due to some romantic pressures, Shiro ended-up reclining the offer to become the new headmaster of Daito-Ryu. At this point, Tanomo approached his bodyguard, the grandson of his teacher ( Saemon Takeda) to ask him to train in his art and assume the headmastership of Daito-Ryu. The bodyguard was Sokaku Takeda, who was already a master of several fighting systems and was trained in some aspects of Daito - Ryu under both his grandfather and his father . The rest is history : Shiro Saigo relocated to Nagasaki and assumed a low public profile, still teaching Daito-Ryu, along with other arts, while, Sokaku Takeda, assumed the title of grandmaster of Daito-ryu and became very well-known until he died in his early 80's. Although Sokaku
Takeda was given the legal successorship of Daito-Ryu from the Shinto priest
and grandmaster of Oshiikiuchi ( Daito-Ryu ) Tanomo Saigo, it must be remembered
that Daito-Ryu had many other branches or divisions which made-up the complete
fighing art of the Minamoto and Aizu clans for 1200-years, and each of
these ryuha or branches were headed by Dai-Soke or headmasters, of which
some still exists today.
Although Onna ha Itto ryu Kenjutsu was the sword art taught to Sokaku Takeda, and is still taught through the Tokimune family line, it was not the only style of kenjutsu taught to the Minamoto and Aizu clans . Other sword arts taught within the Minamoto & Aizu clans included the Kabayashi Ha Itto-Ryu, Mugei-Ryu, Sabashi-Ryu, Koyama-Ryu, Sankaji-Ryu and Sanshin-Ryu. ( The sword arts that Tanomo Saigo's adopted son, Shiro, were taught included both the Mugei-Ryu and Onna Ha Itto Ryu kenjutsu, although he went on to study archery and the yari . ) The purpose of this homepage is to offer information on that branch of Daito-Ryu which derived through Tanomo Saigo, to his adopted Son Shiro Saigo, to his disciple Yamashita Houei, which then broke into two sub branches (one headed by Sogawa Sensei and the other by Sigung Po )and ended-up with two unique groups who call their branch of Daito - Ryu simply " Saigo Ha ". No parts of this homepage is intended to discredit any branch of Daito-Ryu, rather, it is our desire to unite all leaders of Daito-Ryu under one banner to join together as peers and friends in hopes of paying homage to the traditions which is the heart of Daito-Ryu, without the need for politics, jealousy or petty differences.
