home PS2 Winamp Skin Yamp design Drawings

Long before I made the Winamp skin, I had the idea to make a design for another music player, Yamp. In fact, the program is called Yet Another Music Player. The odd name says a lot of the history of the program. At the time, there were several music players available. Yamp was one of them. It was a decent media player. Right from the beginning it was designed so that the user could change its appearance. In an attempt to be unique, it had a lot of features to set it apart from Winamp. For example, the designs could be any shape and size, and the buttons could be placed anywhere. Winamp skins, on the other hand, are confined to the rectangular template and the buttons are always in the same place. However, while Yamp allowed more design flexibility, it couldn't compete with Winamp as an audio player. It was a rather large download, the mp3 decoder was less efficient, it had limited features, and most of the included designs were really ugly and looked like a tie-dyed shirt. It simply wasn't very popular.

At this point the author seems to have given up on it. It's a shame, though, because it had potential. Nevertheless, I rather enjoyed having a PSX controller sitting on my desktop, so I kept the program. I think the Dual Analog design fits well with Yamp's features.

my Y-amp design The main buttons are used for Minimize, Close, Options, and the Playlist Editor. The directional buttons are used for Fast Forward and Rewind, and skipping to the next or previous song. The start, select, and analog buttons have been changed to Stop, Play, and Pause. The little analog LED indicates the play state; green for play, red for pause and unlit for off. Works out well doesn't it? The bars above the controller indicate the current file, its position on the playlist, and percentage of the song played/remaining.
Note that this is not the Dual Shock controller, but the Dual Analog. It was released for a short time before the Dual Shock took its place. It was a great controller because it had larger handles and had a flightstick mode (green) in addition to the analog mode (red). I don't know why Sony decided to remove the flightstick mode. As you can see, the analog knobs were concave and made of smoother plastic, which made control somewhat awkward because your thumbs would slide around inside the cups.

Installation: All the .bmp files go into the /yamp/designs/psx folder. The psx.design file goes under the /yamp folder. See, even the installation for Yamp designs is more complicated than that of Winamp.
