THE FAX OF LIFE
A Weekly Service To The Business Community From SVCC HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?- Part 2
By Rick Warren
Yesterday I heard about a man who bought $50 worth of groceries and then carried them home in his glove compartment! Obviously, it costs more to live today than it ever has. For many people there is "too much month left over at the end of the money." On the other hand, most Americans have far more than they need. Our financial pressures are more likely to be caused by greed than need. How much is enough? The Bible gives no specific amount. Instead, God gives us four general principles to balance our "desire to acquire."
God says you may make as much as you can...
as long as you observe four important limitations:
- ...As long as it doesn't hurt your own health.
"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint!" Pr. 23:4
Foolish people work themselves to death. Your health must take priority over wealth. - ...As long as it doesn't hurt your family.
"A greedy man brings trouble to his family." Pr. 15:27
Homes fall apart when parents are too busy making more. Kids don't need more things - they need more time with their parents. You can be so busy making a living, you forget to make a life! - ...As long as it doesn't hurt other people.
God insists that we make our money honestly and fairly. In fact, he says that dishonestly gained wealth will bring unhappiness. "A fortune can be made from cheating, but there is a curse that goes with it." Pr. 20:21 (LB)
"It's better to have a little, honestly earned, than to have a large income, dishonestly gained." Pr. 16:8 (GN) - ...As long as you give as much attention to growing spiritually.
"I pray that you will prosper physically as (much as ) you do spiritually." 3 Jn:2 (JB)
Having financial goals is commendable - as long as you have spiritual development goals as well. You need balance. The objective of life is far greater than just acquiring things. God want you to get to know him and his plan for your life. Why not start this week?
Until next week... FOL#37
