Project A Review

Project A was directed by Jackie Chan, and made in 1983. He had his brothers next to him in this one, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao. The plot of Project A is that Jackie Chan plays Dragon Ma, a sailor who's crew was taken down after their ships were blown up by pirates. Project A took place in about 1903, and was a homage to Buster Keaton, the silent film star who has been an influence to Jackie for many many years.Dragon Ma and his crew were ordered to be part of the hated police squad. After a short time, Dragon quits after he realizes that gangsters are being protected, and the police can't even stop him. He then meets up with Fay, played by Sammo Hung. Fay is a crook gone straight, or so he says. When Fay tells Dragon that he knows that someone in his police force was selling rifles to pirates, Fay and Dragon stop them, and hide the guns. However, Dragon hears Fay talking to other criminals about buying the guns, and hides them. Later in the film, after an amazing chase sequence and the famous clock-tower stunt,a band of pirates kidnap several rich citizens. "Project A" the mission first started by the coast guard captain is started again, and Jackie leads the group. In the action-packed climax, Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan, and even Sammo Hung and Mars (Long time member of the stunt team that can be seen as Jackie Chan's close friend in Dragon Lord) storm the pirates, and kill the leaders, and most of the others.

Project A was Jackie Chan's big "hit" in a couple ways. First of all, it took in a lot of money at the box office, and second, it's the first movie that gave him his reputation of being crazy, doing all of his dangerous stunts. As mentioned before, the clock tower stunt he did was amazing. At 75 feet in the air, Jackie fell off of a clock-tower, fell through one canvas, and then many feet later, through a second one. He never got a "good" take on this, and what can be seen in the out-takes was the 3rd try, which went horribly wrong. He bounced off the second canvas, and landed smack on his neck, and in one take he broke 5 fingers... ouch.

Anyway, even though I don't watch this movie very often, I feel this is one of Jackie Chan's best movies, and I give it a 9 out of 10.
