After the Ares Conventions were signed in 2412, battles ran rampant across the galaxy. In 2439, the face of war changed; the BattleMech now dominated the field. It was at this time Ishitandai MechWyrks switched from construction equipment to armored war machines. Although technology and resources abounded, most BattleMechs had specific weaknesses that could be easily exploited. None of the major manufacturers were able to come up with the "perfect" 'mech. Generals were forced to group their BattleMechs into small groups called lances to balance equipment weaknesses. While most manufacturers were content to slow research and development in favor of building more 'mechs, Ishitandai MechWyrks launched a bold new plan. Since capturing strategic planets was the goal of the warring powers, and capturing planets meant capturing cities; Ishitandai MechWyrks decide to introduce a city defender. Their flagship, a 100-ton behemoth with immense firepower and armor, captured the attention of the entire galaxy.

The Urban Defender gained immediate popularity with worlds on the rim. The colonies on the edge of known space had to fight not only the major powers, but bandits and even themselves. The major powers, marveled at the size of the monsters and purchased as many as they could.

Unfortunately, the major powers did not use the UDM-1A for its intended mission. Although heavily armed and armored, the Urban Defenders were easily cut off from support in battle. The unwieldy giants were also too slow to advance on heavy fortifications, and would often run out of ammo before reaching the target.

Since the Great Houses experienced many losses, UDM's are rarely seen except on the periphery. There have been rumors, however, that ComStar has these 'mechs stationed outside of key facilities. These 'mechs have also been appearing in the Draconis Combine in surprisingly mint condition.

The Urban Defender is well suited to defending a city or area where there is ample access to supplies. It's armor is strong enough to withstand sniper fire from 'mechs with long range autocannons, relying on faster support 'mechs to deal with such annoyances. The UDM-1A has enough firepower to destroy most other mechs before they can come within weapons range.

This mech was designed by Jason Caesar. It is designed with the convention of "overbuying" armor for 'mechs that do not support an upper limit of armor that is divisible by 8. If your GM insists that all armor must be used in amounts divisible by 8, remove 1/2 ton of armor (only 3pts) and replace one of the MGs (with a ML, Flamer, or LRM Ammo) or add 1/2 ton of MG Ammo. Or use your own replacements. For those who use "double armor" (where the front and rear torsos can support the full ISx2 amount of armor), by scrapping the arm-mounted weapons, you can easily mount the other 10 tons.
