Chapter 5
"Why do I always have to do this kind of crap." Muttered Private Locilus as
he made his was towards the crime scene. "I have to be up at six for my
shift on the comm. system and they wake me up to check out a smudge on the
road." Locilus moved under the police tape and toward the burn. "That
Bukichi deserves a stern ass whupping for this. Him and that bitchy wife of
his." He reached the burn and threw his coat open and snatched a small
scanning gun from his belt. He knelt and ran the scanner over the burn.
When the scan was complete he punched a few buttons on the scanner and
transmitted the results back to his base. The next moment he heard a sound
that made his brain try to jump out his ears. That sound was the easily
recognizable 'click' of the chamber slamming closed on a standard police
issue revolver.
"Don't move, drop the gun, put your hands up, and stand slowly." Came the
heavily metered voice of a veteran police officer. Locilus froze, his hand
still clutching the scanning gun.
"Oh crap," he thought, "I can't let him see me, I didn't bring my cloaking
module. Without it he'll know I'm not human. He'll radio for back up if I
make a move, and I'll be shot if I try to run. I am so screwed right now."
"Drop the gun now!" Screamed the cop. Locilus swallowed hard and let the
scanner fall to the ground.
"Now stand up and put your hands on the back of your head." Said the
officer; his voice was much calmer and smoother now. Locilus stood slowly
and put his hands to the back of his head.
"Ok, now what," he thought, "maybe I could...no, that won't work. He'll
know I'm not human if he comes any closer. He'll know I'm not human...well
there's an idea." Locilus smiled to himself. "I'm so clever." He thought.
The police took a few steps forward and swung his flashlight up so he
could see Locilus' face. When the light illuminated his dark orange skin
Locilus screamed and made the most frightening face he could muster. The
cop was startled but did not react the way Locilus had expected.
"Paralyze him with fear." That was Locilus' plan. Locilus didn't count on
the cop having an itchy trigger finger. The report of the revolver being
fired destroyed any semblance of quiet that had descended on the night. The
bullet rocketed from the barrel and tore through the air. The bullet
pierced through Locilus' orange skin at the top of his left shoulder,
tearing through muscle and shattering bone in the process. The force of the
blow sent Locilus spinning off his feet and collapsing in a heap on the
pavement. "That was really stupid." He said quietly to himself. The cop's
breathing was ragged and his hands were shaking terribly. Despite his being
scared out of his wits, the police officer snatched his radio from his belt
and opened the line to his station.
"Need backup at 14th and 3rd. There is a man down and I need an ambulance
up here now." He said into his radio.
"Roger that, backup and ambulance are on their way." Came a female voice
through the receiver end of the radio. The cop put his radio back on his
belt and took a few cautious steps toward Locilus. Locilus lay there,
trying to will the pain out of his shoulder. With a groan he pushed himself
into a sitting position and looked at his damaged shoulder. His coat had a
large blood stain spreading over his shoulder and Locilus looked up at the
cop who shot him.
"You're going to pay for that." He growled. A moment later Locilus' right
hand began to glow slightly. Locilus forced the energy out of his hand and
formed it into a small dagger of glowing yellow energy. Before the cop
could react Locilus hurled the energy dagger through the air, striking the
cop the left hand. The dagger exploded on impact and the cop screamed in
pain as his hand became charred and useless. While the cop was distracted
by his pain Locilus stood and tried to run away. Despite his charred hand
the cop brought up his gun and fired at the fleeing Locilus. Bullets pelted
the pavement at his feet and Locilus dove over the hood of a nearby parked
car and crouched down on the other side. The cop moved in closer to the car
and waited for Locilus to make a move.

The walls of med-sci are lined with monitors. The monitors are positioned
near where the ceiling meets the walls and each contains a name, rank,
current location, and three lines: one red, one blue, and one green. The
lines represent a person's heart rate, brain waves, and energy output. All
of the monitors were linked up to a person on the base via a small implant
at the base of their brain. The implant monitors and transmits all of the
vital information about a person. Jhessail was dozing quietly at her desk
when one of the monitors began beeping out a warning signal. Jhessail
groggily lifted her head and looked for the offending noise. What she saw
was a monitor whose three lines were spiking wildly. Annoyed at the loss of
her precious naptime, Jhessail slapped the direct communications button on
her desk. A few beeps later a sleepy female voice came through.
"What is it." The voice asked.
"Sorry to disturb you Maneko, but I need to talk to Lieutenant Bukichi."
Said Jhessail.
"Yeah, okay just a second." Said Maneko. Jhessail listened to the soft
rustling that came through the speaker and what sounded like a sack of
birdshot being thrown against a pole barn.
"Ow! What'd you hit me for?" Bukichi voice came through the speaker
faintly.
"Med-sci needs to talk to you." Said Maneko.
"Okay fine." Said Bukichi followed by more rustling. "Bukichi here, what
is it?" He said into the communication terminal on his nightstand.
"It's about the man you sent to inspect the burn sir." Said Jhessail.
"Yeah, Private Locilus. What about him?" Asked Bukichi.
"His vitals are spiking, as if he's in combat sir."
"What?"
"His vital signs are jumping all over the place, it looks like he's in
combat sir."
"That idiot, I send him to do a simple scan and he gets into a fight."
"What should we do sir?"
"Nothing, he's a big boy he should be able to handle it."
"Are you sure sir?"
"Yes, now let me get back to sleep."
"Yes sir. Sorry to disturb you sir."
********
"Where in the hell are they? Med-sci should've spotted my vitals and
someone should have sent help by now." Said Locilus quietly to himself. He
and the cop had been stuck in their positions for the last ten minutes.
"His backup will be here any second." Beads of sweat rolled down his brow
as his mind thrashed around for a plan of escape. Any hopes he had were
shattered when he heard the keening wail of two police cars came to a halt
nearby. Locilus listened to the sound of two pairs of car doors opening and
closing followed by the clicking of shoes on the asphalt. "Only one choice
for me now." He said grimly. He dug into his pants pocket and pulled out a
wallet-sized case. He popped open the case and ran his finger over the four
vials of clear liquid that it contained. "I really didn't want to do this."
He said as he worked one of the vials out of the case and worked the cap
off with one hand. He closed his eyes and swallowed hard before throwing
his head back and pouring the clear fluid into his mouth. "C'mon Cenabide,
don't fail me now." He said after swallowing. He snapped the case shut and
put it back in his pocket. Already he was feeling the Cenabide take effect.
His hearing became sharper and he could smell the oil in the police
officers guns. He could feel his muscles strengthen and the pain in his
shoulder faded away and was replaced by a splendid euphoria. Any fear that
was in him was gone now. His eyes took on a sharp red glow and power
coursed through his veins. He struggled to maintain his rational mind, but
soon the Cenabide induced bloodlust was upon him. In a blur of motion he
stood and rocketed himself over the hood of the car. His attack was so
swift that none of the five officers now present had a chance to react.
They watched him ascend into the sky above them, he seemed to hang in the
air for a moment before he fell like a falcon on the officer who had shot
him earlier. Locilus grabbed the officer and with a quick twist snapped his
neck. Locilus rode him to the ground and, using the officers body as a
springboard, launched himself at the other cops. Two of them had managed to
draw their weapons when Locilus was upon them. Locilus attacked the officer
nearest to him first. Before the officer knew what hit him Locilus had
driven his fist into his sternum so hard that the bone broke and spiked
inward, piercing his heart. Locilus then turned to the next nearest
officer. The officer had his weapon drawn, but had not yet readied the
chamber or taken aim. Locilus threw himself into the officer, burying his
shoulder into his gut. The force lifted the cop off his feet and Locilus
slammed the officer into a nearby wall. The sound of cracking bone mingled
in the air with the sound of brick being crushed for a moment before the
first shots were fired. Locilus ducked down to avoid the bullets and turned
back to the other officers. He leapt into the air and used the building he
was next to as a launch pad. He placed his feet against the building and
seemed to hang in a crouch on the side of the building for a moment before
he launched himself at the two remaining officers. The officers remained
standing and drew their beads carefully before firing. Locilus felt an
intense heat on his left ear before he landed in-between the two cops.
Before they could react Locilus had grabbed their guns and wrenched them
from their grip, taking most of the skin off their trigger fingers along
with them. The officers stumbled back a few feet. Locilus stood and
focused on the one to his right. With a swift jab Locilus struck the
officer in the throat, collapsing his trachea and condemning him to
suffocation. The other was met with a sharp blow to the back of the head as
he turned to run. The officer collapsed, his brain poking out through his
shattered skull. Locilus surveyed the carnage he had wrought for a moment
before walking off into the night. The bloodlust had worn off and he was in
the midst of the so-called 'Cenabide Calm'. A side effect of which is that
Locilus could no longer remember what he was doing there or where he should
go. He wandered off into the darkened streets, it would be some time before
his mind returned to him and he would notice that his left ear was now
missing.

"Usagi wake up!" Yelled Luna at the sleeping princess.
"What, what is it?" Asked a groggy Usagi.
"There's trouble, I've gotten Artemis to inform the others but we have to go
now!"
"But it's three in the morning, can't it wait?"
"No it can't, now let's go!"
