In The Arms of an Angel
By Watari Yutaka (watariyutaka@edsamail.com.ph) and
Lady Aria (writersblock@edsamail.com.ph)
Kamui
drew in a deep breath as he stood at the entrance of Ueno Park. It was early Friday afternoon, almost a week
after he'd made his promise to Seishirou in his dream. He'd made it a point not to tell any of the
other Seals of the promise. They would
just fret over the security of the Imonoyama Estate because of Seishirou's
appearance.
There
was no way any of them would understand.
The
leader of the Seals lifted his foot and took the first step. A second followed, until he was leisurely
walking along the path to the Sakura Tree... about as leisurely a walk one
could take on the way to a lion's den.
The happy chatter of the people around him melted into a bearable buzz
as he continued to contemplate his not-so-desirable situation.
What
did he expect to find at the Tree?
Would
he find the same old Subaru?
Or
would he be facing the Sakurazukamori?
Eventually,
the noise began to die away and the people gradually became less until he stood
alone before the grandeur of the ancient Tree.
A deep sense of foreboding began to creep into Kamui. He never expected to ever find himself
anywhere near this place, let alone looking for the one who sated the Tree's
thirst for blood. In that instant, he
felt hatred and would like nothing more that to wield the shinken and end its
existence.
"Why
am I not surprised to find you here?"
Kamui
overcame his initial shock and took on a defensive stance as Fuuma stepped out
from behind the tree's massive trunk.
Though he still regarded him as his friend, there was no way he'd forget
what he'd done to Kotori, to Subaru, nor to him. He watched the leader of the Angels stop six feet away and noted
the chilling smile on his face.
"What
are you doing here, Fuuma?"
"Same
thing as you, I believe," he replied nonchalantly, "looking for the
Sakurazukamori."
"What
do you want with Subaru?"
"I
need to know...." Fuuma turned to look at the Tree and smiled evilly.
"...Where he stands. Angel or
Seal. The both of us know of the power
that he possesses, especially now that he is the Sakurazukamori. The tides of this 'war' between us could
very well shift as a direct result of his decision." He turned to look back at Kamui, the smile
changing into a leer. "But I
suppose you already know that, being Kamui and all. I trust that this is also the reason for your presence."
"You're
wrong," Kamui replied, anger creeping into his voice. "I came here to look for him. To see if he's alright and to bring him
home. But I'm sure that no longer
matters to you. I don't even think that
you care about the well-being of the other Angels."
Fuuma
laughed. "You're right. I don't.
So long as I win." He
watched in amusement as Kamui's hands crackled with energy as he walked closer.
"If
it's a fight you want...."
"Save
it, Kamui," Fuuma said as he stepped beside him and just walked past, much
to Kamui's surprise. "The Sakura
Tree will not allow any killing here, unless it is done by the
Sakurazukamori."
Kamui
looked back at the receding boy's figure and flushed hotly at his next words.
"When
the time comes, I will fight you and win.
Then, when I can have my way, you will get to know many things before I
release you to death."
<Bastard,>
Kamui thought with disgust before returning to the task at hand. Subaru was not
at Ueno Park, nor at the other places he'd visited during the course of the
week. There was only one other place
left to check.
Tokyo
Tower.
Kamui
managed to arrive at the Tower just as the sun began its descent. He was grateful for the fact that there
weren't that many people. At least he
wouldn't have much of a problem looking for Subaru. Unfortunately, there being not many people did not mean that
Subaru would be there. He felt his
steps echoing hollowly in his ears as he walked around the viewing platform,
looking desperately, and apologizing profusely to those he'd unwittingly
disturbed, until he came back to where he started. Sighing, he was just about to give up when he spotted a man
hunched over the railing, looking almost blankly at the city below. He was wearing a black trench coat with the
collar of a deep green turtleneck shirt peaking over the collar of its
lapels. Kamui wondered why he didn't
notice him before until the realization hit him.
The
Sakurazukamori's prime weapon was the maboroshi.
"Subaru?"
Kamui walked over to him hesitantly.
"Subaru?"
"How
long has it been, Kamui?"
The
boy stopped in his tracks at the sound of his voice. It was raw, as though from disuse. "A month, maybe a few days over."
"I
see."
Kamui
took the last few steps until he was beside him. Subaru was thinner than he remembered and he looked like he
hadn't been sleeping at all. Almost
like he had nothing left to go on.
"So, what have you been doing since...."
"Thinking,"
he replied, still looking blindly at the city lights. "I met with Seishirou's lawyer. Apparently, he'd made a will just before he died, proclaiming me
as his sole heir. He left me
everything...."
"...Including
the Tree."
"Yes,"
Subaru replied. "Especially the
damned Tree."
Kamui
was at a loss for words. He was glad to
finally have found Subaru, but he couldn't help but feel a bit scared. The man before him now was not the man he
remembered. <What if becoming the
Sakurazukamori also meant that he was now an Angel?> That thought kept nagging at the back of his
mind. "You've... lost quite some
weight since I last saw you," Kamui began. He had to start a conversation, any conversation, if only to keep
such thoughts out of his mind.
"You were already thin enough a month ago... this couldn't be good
for you."
"Are
you trying to lecture me, Kamui?"
Subaru finally tore his gaze from the city below and fixed his good eye
on the boy. He watched as the young
Seal took several steps back from him.
"Because I don't exactly think you are in a good enough position to
do so."
"A-ano...."
In
a flash, the viewing platform dropped away and the two of them were plunged
into the darkness of a maboroshi.
Sakura petals swirled around Subaru as light emanating from the Tree
became the only source of illumination.
Kamui tried to back away but he found that thick roots had somehow
managed to twist themselves around his ankles, keeping him in place. He watched in horror as the swirling
blossoms stopped in mid air and rushed in his direction, tearing fabric and
skin. Through all this, Kamui kept his
silence. Two thoughts were the only
things that kept him from succumbing to the pain.
This
is the man who saved me from myself.
I
had made a promise I must keep.
Just
as suddenly, the Sakura stopped their assault and he felt himself collapse to
his knees as the bindings on his feet were released. Looking up, he saw Subaru towering over him.
"Leave
me to my fate, Kamui," he said coldly.
"I am no longer a Seal, nor am I an Angel. It all ended the day Seishirou died. All that remains is a life filled with
death."
"That's
not true," Kamui interjected.
"Sakurazukamori or not, you are still Subaru Sumeragi, the
thirteenth head of the Sumeragi Clan and one of the Seven Seals. This isn't you talking. You've known the pain of losing someone you
love before, but still you managed to live.
You saved me from my own despair when Kotori died. I'm here because I need you to come
back." Kamui reached up weakly to
the hand that still bore the mark of the Sakurazukamori. "Subaru... onegai...."
Subaru
looked into the youth's pained eyes imploring him and felt the light brush of
his hand on his before the teenager's hand began to slip back down. He knew that Kamui had been looking for him
but he also knew that being with him wouldn't lead to anything good happening
to the boy nor to the rest of the Seals.
He knelt before the wounded youth and held him, channeling energy from
the Tree to heal Kamui's wounds, much to the Sakura's consternation.
"I'm
sorry for putting you through all this, Kamui," Subaru whispered into his
ear. "But you must understand that
I can no longer go back."
As
the two got back on their feet, the maboroshi melted away to reveal once again
the viewing platform and the majestic sunset.
"This
wasn't exactly the first on my list of places to find you," Kamui said
quietly as Subaru once again stared off.
"Any particular reason?"
"When
I was sixteen," Subaru began, leaning his elbows on the guard rail,
"I was asked to exorcise a spirit that haunted Tokyo Tower. Seishirou-san... well, he stayed with me
that night. The ghost didn't appear
until past midnight, so you could imagine how long we waited. We talked about a lot of things.... That was before I knew that he was the Sakurazukamori.... Before I realized that I was in love with
him."
"Is
life so horrible without him that you're letting yourself waste
away?" Kamui surprised himself
then. The words were meant to come out
laced with anger, but instead, they were sad.
"Would he have wanted you to be like this?"
Subaru
sighed as he hugged himself.
"Frankly, I don't know what he would have wanted me to do."
"Ever
think that he'd have wanted you to live?"
Kamui replied.
"On
what?" Subaru countered. He was
starting to tire of the pointless exchange.
"I died with Seishirou that day, don't you see? Why can't you understand that?"
"It's
you who doesn't understand, Subaru." Bitterness started to well in Kamui's
throat, like bile. "You want to
have something to go on, then let me help you."
"How?"
"I'll
think of something," Kamui said as he closed his hand over Subaru's. "In the meantime, let's get some meat
into those bones of yours."
***
"I
don't know how you talked me into this...."
"Let's
just say that I needed the change in scenery."
Subaru
shook his head as he took one of Kamui's suitcases and carried it into the
guestroom of Seishirou's apartment. He
hadn't made any changes to the place, since he was mostly out. Granted, the place looked pretty gloomy the
way it was, but it matched his current mood perfectly. He set the suitcase down beside the bed just
as the boy entered carrying the other one.
"One
thing puzzles me though," Subaru said as he moved towards the door. "How did you get the others to agree to
you moving out of the Imonoyama Estate?"
"It's
a... long story...."
~~ Flashback ~~
"Are
you out of your mind?!"
Kamui
rolled his eyes as Sorata began rattling out the dangers of moving out of the
security of the Imonoyama Estate and CLAMP Campus. Agreed, this was not one of his brighter ideas, but how was he
supposed to look out for Subaru if he was practically on the other side of the
city?
"I
would have to agree with Sorata on this one," Arashi said as she stepped
forward. "You would only present
yourself as an open target for the Dragons of Earth should you choose to
continue with this."
The
young Seal sighed in annoyance.
"Look, it's not like I will be in much danger," he said. "One, I am strong enough to defend
myself against any of the remaining Angels, even Fuuma. Two, there is no point in attacking me where
I will be because there is no kekkai anywhere near the apartment. And three, I'll be staying with Subaru. They will have to think twice before
attacking the person who defeated the Sakurazukamori."
"Honey,
I'm not sure if this particular realization has hit you yet," Karen
interjected as she placed a hand on Kamui's shoulder. "But, Subaru is now THE Sakurazukamori. You said yourself that that title is passed onto
the person who kills the current Sakurazukamori. I admit, I don't know him that well, but what makes you think
that he won't eventually turn on you?"
"Karen-san's
right," Seiichiro Aoki agreed.
"As much as I respect your decision, Kamui, I cannot in good
conscience allow you to do this."
"What
makes any of you think that I'm asking for your permission?!!" He watched with mild satisfaction as the
other five Seals visibly backed away.
He heard Inuki whimper as he hid behind Yuzuriha. "I just TOLD you where I was
going. I don't care whether or not you
agree with my decision." Energy
was crackling through his clenched fists, signaling that he was on the verge of
losing his temper. "None of you
understand him the way I do, which is why I took it upon myself to do this. I
KNOW that he will not turn on me."
~~ End Flashback ~~
<Why
did they all have to be so difficult?>
Kamui thought as he started to put his things away in the closet and the
bureau. A few minutes, later, Subaru
appeared bringing with him some hangers for Kamui's clothes. "Thanks," Kamui said as he
unfolded his school uniforms and hung them up.
He could see Subaru watching him out of the corner of his eye. Come to think of it, the onmyouji WAS
starting to act a little strange.
"Would
you like to have some tea?" Subaru asked finally.
"Uhm,
sure."
A
few minutes later, the two of them were sitting in the kitchen with a pair of
steaming cups of green tea between them.
"The
kitchen seems to be a bit underused," Kamui observed between sips. "Subaru, do you cook or do you just
have your food delivered?"
"I
don't eat."
"Oh,"
Kamui said as he set down the cup and moved towards the fridge. Opening it, all he saw were some old pieces
of bread, bad cheeses and some cans of beer.
<Ick,> he thought as he pulled up the trashcan and started
throwing the bad foodstuffs out. He
could feel Subaru's bemused gaze on his back and said, "from now on, I
will see to it that you eat decent food.
I get out of school pretty early, so I can tidy up here and cook when
you're out and then...." Kamui's rambling came to a grinding halt as he
heard an unfamiliar sound.
Subaru
was laughing.
"Subaru?"
Kamui said as he looked back at the onmyouji in confusion.
"It's
nothing," Subaru said as he stifled the rest of his chuckles. "It's just that you sounded so much
like my sister just now...."
A
rare smile came to Kamui's face then.
"You know, this is the first time I've ever heard you laugh... or
seen you smile."
"I
don't really have a lot of things to be happy about of late."
"Well,
I'm glad that I've been of service in that department," Kamui replied with
an even bigger smile. "Now, I'm
going to make a grocery list...."
The
two of them went through the entire apartment, checking rooms and basically taking
inventory of what was there. They had
reserved Seishirou's bedroom, currently Subaru's, for last, knowing that it
would be the hardest for the onmyouji to go through. Upon entering, Kamui threw open the curtains and opened the
sliding glass panels that led to the terrace, thus banishing the shadows that
lingered within. Subaru watched mutely
as Kamui began opening closets and bureaus, his black uniform making him look
like a shadow flitting from one end of the room to the other. He walked towards the youth as Kamui pulled
out one of Seishirou's Armani suits from the closet.
"This
might sound a little morbid," he began, "but could you please put
this on?"
"What
for?"
"Subaru,
could you, uhm, just humor me on this one?"
Subaru
shook his head and went to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, he came back out, wearing the black suit. It felt good on his skin, and it still
smelled like Seishirou.
"It
looks good on you," Kamui said approvingly.
"Kamui,
it's too big."
"That's
not a problem," the boy replied.
"We can easily have a tailor to fix it so that it fits you...
unless... you don't want to, well, be wearing HIS clothes. I admit, it does seem a little
unsettling."
"No,"
Subaru said as he looked at himself on the full-length mirror mounted on the
inside of one of Seishirou's closet doors.
"Actually, that is a pretty good idea. But I'll limit that to just the suits...." <Because they make me feel what it
would've been like to be this close to you.>
"Okay,"
Kamui said as he started to fix the mess he'd made. "Well, looks like we're done here. Would you like to come with me for the groceries?"
That
night, Kamui slept like a rock.
***
Life
at the new household was blissfully uneventful, i.e., no attacks came from
either side. Kamui always woke up early
and had a surprisingly delicious breakfast ready by the time Subaru wandered
into the kitchen. He was also a good
housekeeper - keeping the place clean, watering the plants, making sure the
fridge was always stocked. It surprised
Subaru to see Kamui so... domesticated.
During one of their lazy weekends, Kamui and Subaru managed to find a
tailor that could do the necessary alterations on Seishirou's suits. A week later, Subaru was stopping men and
women alike dead on their tracks, pardon the pun, with the striking figure he
cut.
"Subaru,"
Kamui called out from the kitchen when he heard the front door open,
"dinner will be ready in a little while.
By the way, there were several messages for you. Two of them were from the two families
thanking you for exorcising the spirits earlier this week and they said that
the payment has already been deposited into your account. The third message was something about a
long-distance call from Kyoto, but the caller didn't mention who she was."
Subaru
nearly dropped the cake he'd picked up on the way home at the mention of the
words 'Kyoto' and 'she'. "Did the
voice sound like an old woman's?"
"Yeah,"
Kamui said as he came out, wiping his hands on the white apron he wore. "She said that you have to call her
back as soon as possible."
He
nodded absently as he handed the cake to Kamui who rushed back into the kitchen
as a timer went off. This was the thing
that he dreaded, but it would be too much to hope for that she didn't find out.
Lifting the telephone's receiver, he
dialed the number.
One
ring.
Two.
Three.
"Moshi-moshi?"
"You
called," Subaru said plainly and soft enough so that Kamui wouldn't hear.
"It's
good to hear your voice, though I certainly wish that the circumstances were
not like this," Lady Sumeragi said in a voice that said that she was
barely holding back the tears.
"How long did you think you could keep this secret from me? I felt your transformation. I felt the shift of balance. You have become the light and the
dark."
"I
know," Subaru replied. "This
is not exactly a good time...."
"I
understand." Lady Sumeragi's voice started to tremble. "Subaru, I have raised you the best I
could. This is something that you must
face on your own. If you should need me,
just say the word and I will be there...."
"I
know," Subaru said sadly.
"But you have already done enough for me. As you said, this is something that I must face on my own."
"Take
care of yourself."
"You
too."
Kamui
emerged from the kitchen in time to see Subaru replace the receiver onto its
cradle. "Did you return the
call?"
"Yes."
"So,
who was it?" Kamui asked as they sat down to eat. "She sounded quite anxious on the
recording."
"My
grandmother."
"Oh." Kamui knew from Subaru's tone that he
shouldn't have pressed the issue. He
visibly jumped when he heard the onmyouji speak.
"So,
how was school?"
The
rest of the dinner conversation was taken up by Kamui telling him about the
hellish surprise test they'd been given on ancient Chinese history and how the
rest of the Seals kept asking about him and when the two of them would decide
to move back into the Imonoyama Estate.
It was a relief, to say the least, to have a semblance of normality in
the apartment. After dessert, Kamui
began clearing up the dishes and was surprised to see Subaru get up and walk in
the direction of the coat closet.
"Are
you going somewhere?"
"Yes,"
he replied. "I have an exorcism to
attend to at the Shibuya district. This
might take a while, so don't wait up for me."
"Be
careful."
"I
will," Subaru replied. "Itte
mairimasu."
"Itte
irasshai."
Kamui
watched as the door closed behind Subaru before going back to the pile of
dishes. He hadn't really realized how
much work it was to maintain an apartment this size, but after a few days, he
started to get the hang of it.
Finishing off the last of the dirty dishes, Kamui took off his apron,
draped it over a chair and stretched.
CLAMP Campus was giving their students an extended weekend because of an
upcoming festival to give the workers time to set up everything without having
too many students underfoot. He was
planning on using the time to convince Subaru to attend it.
As
soon as he stepped out of the kitchen, a chill ran up his spine, signaling that
there was something terribly amiss.
Kamui didn't even have time to scream as something tackled him from
behind and he collapsed unconscious on the floor.
***
Subaru
came in at about midnight, shutting the door gently so he wouldn't wake
Kamui. The job had been easy enough. The presence was a poltergeist, not a dead
spirit. All he had to do was to
successfully plant an ofuda on the thing and it dissipated like mist. Apparently, all the hostility that had been
pent up by the occupants had evolved into a presence that gravitated towards
destruction. Things such as these were
easier on Subaru's conscience since it did not bring with it emotional baggage
the way spirits of dead people did. Unfortunately,
though, it did entail chasing the thing into a dusty attic and getting himself
covered with dirt.
<I
look like hell,> Subaru thought as he peeled off his clothes and tossed them
into the hamper. He stepped into the
shower and let a stream of warm water soothe his aching muscles as he scrubbed
himself free of the grime he'd picked up.
Moving his hand to his face, he felt the roughness of stubble on his
chin. He closed the water, towel dried
his hair, and wrapped a fresh towel around his waist before stepping out. He had just finished lathering shaving cream
on his face and neck when he heard the door to the bath open.
"You're
back," Kamui yawned sleepily, blinking at the room's bright lighting and
looking like a little kid in a set of too-large white pajamas.
"I
got in about thirty minutes ago," Subaru replied as he began to shave.
"Can
I help?"
"With
what?"
"Shaving,"
Kamui said as he stepped in.
Subaru
looked incredulously at the teenager.
"This is usually something that one does by one's self."
"Oh,
come on," Kamui protested.
"Please?"
The
sight of Kamui looking like a little lost puppy wearing pajamas was enough to
break down Subaru's feeble defenses.
"Oh, alright. But be very
careful, okay? I don't want to get
nicked."
"I
will." Kamui moved beside him and
took the razor in his hand, sliding the keen blade over the pale skin of his
neck and cheek before tapping the razor on the sink to get rid of the
dross. He could smell the light scent
the shaving cream left on Subaru's skin and in a few more strokes, he was done
and managed not to cut Subaru. Still,
the scent of the cologne remained on the onmyouji's skin, and on his hand where
he'd grazed some of the white froth.
"Kamui,
what...?" Subaru muttered as he felt Kamui's arms wrap around him from
behind and the warmth of his cheek on his back. He would've struggled against him if the image reflected against
the mirror hadn't stunned him into silence.
In
the mirror, was the image of him and Kamui, only Kamui's eyes were an intense
shade of gold.
"Ohisashiburi
da na, Subaru-kun."
Subaru's
breath caught in his throat as Kamui's form began to change, becoming taller,
more muscular, filling the white fabric.
Now the image on the mirror was of him and Seishirou.
"This
can't be real," Subaru whispered, yet he was unwilling to tear his gaze
from the mirror, afraid that it was indeed a hallucination. Mesmerized, he watched Seishirou in the
mirror as he cupped his chin in one hand.
Closing his eyes, he felt Seishirou's lips close over his.
"Open
your eyes, Subaru-kun," Seishirou whispered into his ear. "I'm not going anywhere."
Subaru
nodded and slowly opened his eyes. He
half-expected to see a bewildered and flustered Kamui, but instead....
"Seishirou-san...."
He
practically threw himself at Seishirou, laughing and crying at the same
time. It had been too good to be true,
but it was. He sucked in a breath, just
as he remembered that they weren't exactly alone in the apartment.
"Oh,
no," Subaru said as he snatched his robe off a hook. "I forgot about Kamui. I'd better go check up on him and make
sure... what's so funny?"
Seishirou
had started chuckling as soon as Subaru mentioned Kamui. "Sorry about that, Subaru-kun," he
began as he once again wrapped his arm around Subaru's waist. "But you don't have to worry about him
because he's right here."
"What're
you talking about?"
A
mischievous glint danced on Seishirou's eyes as he answered with another
question. "Whose body do you think
I'm using?" The shock on the
onmyouji's face was priceless.
"Don't worry, no harm will come to him and he won't even remember a
thing."
"But
still...."
Seishirou
silenced the rest of his protests with another kiss, this time drawing it out
longer as he held Subaru against him.
The breathless gasp that came from Subaru as he struggled to get air
back into his lungs ensured that there would no longer be any protest to the
case. Like newly-weds, Seishirou swept
him off his feet and carried him into the bedroom. Once inside, the kissing resumed, this time, deeper and of an
intensity that left Subaru feeling light-headed. He would've fainted if Seishirou hadn't been there to hold him
up. Seishirou's lips began to stray
from Subaru's and began to travel down towards his neck, making the younger man
take several steps backwards until the two of them lost their balance and fell
on the bed.
"You're
blushing," Seishirou murmured into his ear as he began nibbling on it.
"I-I,"
Subaru stuttered, turning redder, "I-I just...." He gave up trying to say anything and just
redirected Seishirou's lips back onto his.
"That
kiss said a lot."
"I
know." Subaru then closed his eyes
as he felt the robe and the towel come off.
At that moment, the fact that Seishirou was there with him was all that
mattered.
***
The
two of them lay in each other's arms, giddy and exhausted. The luminous digital clock on the nightstand
read 5:00 AM. Outside, the first
glimmers of false dawn were already starting to lighten the night sky.
Subaru
snuggled deeper into Seishirou's arms, loving the feel of the warmth of his
body against his... loving the way the smell of his skin clung on his like an
exotic perfume... loving everything about the man he'd given himself to. Still, the coming of dawn placed a damper
upon his spirit, fearing that he would lose him again the way spirits tended to
disappear at daybreak.
"Subaru."
The
onmyouji looked up in time to receive another kiss from his lover - for now
they were indeed that - and the kiss was just as sweet as the countless number
of kisses they had shared that night.
"I wish we could stay like this forever," he whispered,
nudging his head beneath Seishirou's chin.
"I'm
afraid that's impossible," Seishirou replied with a sadness that made
tears start to form at the corner of Subaru's eyes. "As it is, I don't belong in this world anymore... but I
couldn't bring myself to leave without saying good-bye... and something
else."
Subaru
looked up at him in confusion, but the next words that came out of Seishirou's
mouth almost made his heart stop beating.
"Ai
shiteiru... zutto."
"Seishirou-san,"
Subaru breathed as he stared at him.
"You don't know how long...."
"I
do, believe me, I do," Seishirou whispered as held Subaru close, feeling
the other's tears dampening his chest.
"There was just no way our respective destinies would have allowed
such a thing." Gently, he pushed
Subaru away and began putting the discarded pajamas back on.
"Where're
you going?"
"The
sun's coming up and Kamui will wake soon.
I don't think you'd want to explain to him why he's in bed and naked
with you, right?" He laughed at
the bright flush that came to Subaru's face.
"I thought not."
Subaru
followed him to Kamui's room and watched as he threw back the covers over the
bed and lay down. Kneeling beside the
bed, the two of them shared one final kiss just before Seishirou's spirit
detached itself from Kamui's body. Like
a wave flowing over sand, the teenager's features returned to normal, bringing
with it a sadness at the parting, yet happiness, too, at knowing that Seishirou
had felt the same way for him. A warm zephyr
swirled around Subaru's body in an embrace and words that would carry him
through until the day they should meet again.
Ai
shiteiru.
<Ore
mo,> Subaru thought as the zephyr left just as the first rays of light
filtered into the room.
***
"Ohayou."
Kamui
muttered a very tired 'ohayou' in return and slumped down on a seat beside the
dining table. "You seem to be in a
good mood," he yawned as he watched Subaru ladling pancake batter onto a
frying pan.
"I
am."
"You
had a good night?" Kamui's arms had
found their way onto the table and had become the pillow for his aching head.
"I
did," Subaru replied as he lowered the heat on the stove. "You, on the other hand, look like you
woke up on the wrong side of the bed."
"I
don't know," the teenager replied into his arms. "I remember turning in early last night, but I still feel
like I ran a marathon. At least one of
us had a good night's sleep."
"I
wouldn't say that," Subaru said, smiling as he expertly flipped the
pancake over. "Let's just say that
an angel visited me last night."
Turning to face Kamui, he shook his head in amusement when he saw that
he had fallen asleep. Shutting off the
heat, he helped him back on his feet and ushered him back to bed. He was grateful that Kamui did seem to be oblivious
to the events of that night. There was
one thing he was sure of, though.
It
was a good day to be alive.
