Have You Ever?

by Lady Aria (bukiminatenshi@mailcity.com)

* Have you ever been in love

* Been in love so bad

* You’d do anything to make them understand

Relena runs over to the two brown-haired figures walking towards the school. Before she could say anything, Duo greeted her brightly while Heero just turned his back and walked away.

<Why is he always like this?> she asks herself, hurt. <I just want to let him know how I feel.>

* Have you ever had someone

* Steal your heart away

* You’d give anything to make them feel the same

Relena looks up to see Wing shielding her from the falling rubble. She looks up to the sensors, as though she could somehow see the pilot inside the cockpit. It was strange. Heero had had the perfect opportunity to rid himself of her, yet he chose to save her.

<Why?> she thought, <why save me if I’m such a thorn on your side?>

Inside, Heero wonders the same thing as he turned Wing around and flew off, confused.

* Have you ever searched for words

* To get you in their heart

* But you don’t know what to say

* And you don’t know where to start

Relena stands at a cliff overlooking the Cinq kingdom and looks off into the horizon. Thoughts of the mysterious boy, Heero, dance through her mind. He’d told her that he would kill her, then he saved her. She’d found out a little bit about him from Dr. J, but she still wanted to know more about him. She wondered why she felt this way about a simple soldier in this war between OZ and the colonies. It left her feeling confused and at the same time lonely.

She collapses to the ground and clutches her arms as she shivered. She wished that her adoptive father was still alive. She wishes that Heero would spare her a glance that contained anything other than the single-minded look that he always wore. She wished....

* Have you ever found the one

* You’ve dreamed of all your life

* You’d do anything to look into their eyes

Relena finishes her speech for the Romefeller Foundation and happened to look up. She sees Heero holding a gun and looking down at her from the balcony. Slowly, he lifts the gun and cocks it in her direction.

<He’s going to make good on his promise,> Relena thought as she stared at the barrel. Steeling herself, she looks directly into his eyes. <If I have to die today, I’d die by his hand.> She closed her eyes and waited for the crack of gunfire.

To her surprise, the only sound that greeted her was that of applause. She opens her eyes to see the various members of the Foundation getting up to congratulate her. She looks up to the balcony.

Heero was already gone.

* Have you finally found the one

* You’ve given your heart to

* Only to find that one won’t give their heart to you

Relena looks at the letter accompanying the teddy bear that had been left on her seat in the spacecraft. She looks out the window to see a receding figure outside.

"Heero!" Relena called out. She sees him look up at her and tears up the letter. "I want you to give it to me personally!"

Heero ignores her and walks away.

She’s hurt by what he’s done but she couldn’t run down to go after him. The spacecraft would be leaving soon.

* Have you ever closed your eyes

* And dreamed that they were there

* And all you can do is wait for the day when they would care

Relena opened her eyes and looked out the window. It had only been a dream. She’d thought that Heero had come to tell her that he also cared for her, but it had only been a dream. She wrapped her arms around her knees and cried as the morning sun bathed her silken sheets in its warm, golden light.

* What do I gotta do to get you in my arms, baby

* What do I gotta say to get to your heart

Relena looks at the torn dress that hung inside her closet. She’d worn that dress on her fifteenth birthday. The day when she’d followed Heero to the base and when he nearly killed her if it weren’t for Duo. She’d torn the skirt up to bandage Heero’s wounds.

* To make you understand how I need you next to me

Relena takes it off its place in the closet and lays it on the bed. It still had some trace smells of gunpowder and smoke from that time even though it’s been laundered. It was the only thing she had to remind herself of Heero aside from the teddy bear he’d obviously left for her.

* I gotta get you in my world

* ‘Cause baby I can’t sleep

She fingers the torn edge of the fabric as tears come to her eyes. He was just too cold.

It was funny the way life plays out its game. She had had so many suitors since the war ended, all of them from influential families, some of which could trace their bloodline for centuries. Yet, none of them made her heart beat the way Heero did.

She clutched the dress in her fists and sobbed into the fabric, whispering Heero’s name.

* Have you ever loved somebody so much

* It makes you cry

* Have you ever needed something so bad

* You can’t sleep at night

Relena looks over the city from a penthouse suite. <Somewhere, probably in this very colony, Heero could be wandering,> she thought as she sighed. She knew that she should let her feelings for him go. He doesn’t love her, that much he’d let on.

* Have you ever tried to find the words

* But they don’t come out right

* Have you ever

Relena reflects upon the times she and Heero’d been together. She’d had so much she wanted him to know, but by the time she was ready to tell him, he’d run off again. She picked up a long-stemmed red rose from a vase and sniffed its perfume. She opened the sliding balcony doors and stepped out into the chill wind, clutching her robe to her body with the rose against her heart. She smiled at the flickering lights below her. Somewhere down there, a small artificial river flowed.

She took another sniff at the rose and a tear rolled down her cheek.

"Ai shiteiru, Heero," Relena whispered as she leaned over the balcony’s edge.

The rose drifted down towards the river as Relena collapsed to the cold stone floor.

<You are such a coward, Relena Darlian,> she said to herself as she sobbed into her hands, <you can’t even take your own life.>

* Have you ever?
