This is my shrine to my second-favorite Seiryuu Seishi, Tomo-chan! (Loki: EWWWWW!! It's Kakaka the homo!!)
(Margi ignores her outburst) Anyway, as I was saying, next to Nakago, Tomo is my favorite member of the Seiryuu Shichiseishi/seven (whatever version you happen to be watching)Well, as of a few days ago, I FINALLY got the new tape of the FY dub, and Tomo's english version has been revealed to ever-impatient me. What do I think about it? Hmmmm, that's actually a difficult question, since, even after watching his first few scenes over and over, I still haven't come to an official opinion yet. For the record, I `will' make the statement that in this case, I DO prefer his original seiyuu. (most horrible offense, they got rid of his cackle!! dub-Tomo doesn't laugh like, 'kakakakakaka' anymore! :( Instead, they gave him a weird, but equally sinister laugh. (mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha) It works, but it can never replace the cackle! As to his english voice itself, it has it's good points and bad points. He sounds really educated and refined (a bit snobby and formal though) And his voice is somewhat nasal. One point I `will' give them is that they properly called his clamshell 'shin', and they chose an actor who plays Tomo to be oh-so-polite at the same time as being sinister. One nitpick is that he makes him sound older than he really is. (I'm hard-pressed to believe that english Tomo is only 21) Oh well, it's not nearly as bad as the mutilation they did casting poor Tasuki, so I'm not really going to complain.
I think Tomo is cool for several reasons, not the least of which is that he's gorgeous without his makeup on ;)
But, I digress. You have to admit, Tomo does have a cool power, making illusions could certainly come in handy. (especially if you wanted to skip class)
alot of people have written Tomo off as an evil, sadistic creep who enjoys watching other people suffer. I don't feel this is really the case. SPOILERS!! Okay, he DID try to kill Tamahome, but look at it this way, Tamahome was his enemy, and enemies tend to try to kill each other. And with Miaka, Tomo could've EASILY killed her, but he didn't. (Yes, he `was' going to 'deflower' her, but isn't that much better than death? Besides, if she hadn't broken free of the illusion, she would've thought it was with the man she loved, and she could've lived happily ever after in that wonderful dreamworld he created for her. (Margi wishes that Tomo-chan would create a world for her where there isn't any work supervisors ;)
Also, I realize that there are quite a few people who don't like Tomo simply because of his sexual orientation. (yes, homo-phobes, Tomo DID love Nakago, another man! `gasp!')
I find it amusing that Tomo was so shy around Nakago, and even Yuu Watase, the creator of Fushigi Yuugi has said that Tomo is a shy person. Not too many evil people I know are shy. (well, the only two evil people I know are my boss at work, who hates all good things, and as such would never visit an anime page, and my sister, who is evil incarnate, but neither of them are shy, so it proves my point ;)
And besides, here's hoping, I don't think Tomo is completely gay, he said he 'preferred' men, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't sleep with a woman. (he just needed the right one ;)
Some people have also said that Tomo is a woman-hater, but Yuu Watase herself said that Tomo could be friends with a woman. The only reason that some people claimed that Tomo hated Soi was because she was sleeping with Nakago, and Tomo was jealous. (Which, to be frank, from what I observed in the fansubs, I didn't pick up on that. In fact, on the contrary, I got the impression that Tomo admired her for her powers.)
Also, take into consideration his background, abandoned as a child, and raised by dancers. (the arts will mess ANYBODY up, I speak from the experience of more than six years involved in theater! ;)
Well, that's about all I have to say about Tomo-chan for now. I've been playing around with the idea for a fanfic about him for some time, so maybe I'll write it. Imagine this, what would happen if, at some point in his past, Tomo fell in love with a boy, who turned out, (heheheh) to be a girl? That's the premise of the story I was playing with. What do you think? should I write it? :)
And of course, in closing, I must confess to being a proud, (if insane) member of the Cackling Tomo Fanclub! ;)
