This movie is based on the very popular Chinese story, "Butterfly Lovers." It is about the tragic love story between Liang Shan-Bo (played by Nicky) and Zhu Ying-Tai (played by Charlie Yeung) who become butterflies after their death. The story takes place in feudal China. Zhu Ying-Tai goes to Sung Yee college, disguised as a male, in order to receive an education since she is not skilled in the arts of calligraphy, music, and poetry. At the school, her true identity is kept secret by the headmistress who arranges for Zhu Ying-Tai to sleep in the school library, which is off limit to students at night. On her first night there, she discovers a secret companion in the library. It is the young scholar, Liang Shan-Bo, who sneaks in every night to read the scrolls of classic poetry. They later become close friends. When Liang Shan-Bo finds out Zhu Ying-Tai is a female, they fall in love. However, her family decides to marry her to the Ma family who holds respectable positions in the government. Thus, their love is plunged into a tragedy.
