SHAVING AT McDONALD'S

Hot and humid, it was like summer in Tokyo, a nightmare, really. I had not expected days to be that terrible in Toronto too. There were just two or three such days in Toronto last summer. However it was hot and humid by Canadian standards, not Japanese standards. Therefore, I could bear it. This summer, however, even to me it was incredible. It got thirty-five point five degrees centigrade with a humidity index of forty-four degrees centigrade one day. We were having that heat and humidity almost every day for a while. In a TV news program a reporter even tried to figure out if an egg would fry on the hood of a car. It was like burning in hell. The house I lived in had no air conditioner. To make matters worse, my room had only one small window providing no ventilation. I was really having a hard time surviving. I woke up and found I was sweating. I took a cold shower but kept sweating. I used an electric shaver, so in order to shave, I had to stop sweating first. However, that was sometimes impossible, so I remained unshaven. Of course, I knew about shaving cream, but I did not want to spend some money to buy some. Also, it would not work anyway in that heat. I did not work nor went to school at that moment. I just studied English for TOEIC at library by myself. If I just saw my friends, it was still ok. However I had a blind date, so it was a different story. I had to shave. The first impression would be very important! You know, you could be really excited before a blind date. At the same time, you could be nervous. On the day I had the blind date, I took a cold shower to cool down and shave, but it was not possible unfortunately. I still kept sweating. Also the more I tried to stop sweating, the more cold sweat I had. I really needed to shave. Then, I came up with an idea, which was, to go to MacDonalds with my electric shaver, where we were to meet, twenty minutes earlier than scheduled. As soon as I got there, I went straight to a bathroom to wash my face with cold water first. And then, I went to the dining room to have a seat and to stop sweating. It was of course air conditioned. Thank goodness! Then, after my sweat completely stopped, I went back to the bathroom to shave. While I was shaving, a gentleman came into the bathroom and looked at me oddly. I was embarrassed, but I could do nothing but smile at him saying "Hi." I knew I looked really silly, but I was desperate to give a better impression to my date. Anyway, I could see my date with a clean shaven face thanks to MacDonalds help. How did it go? I will leave it to your imagination!
