thebench

The Bench
A wooden bench
worn over by the many
people just sitting
waiting
Two friends sitting on
that same bench
A lonely night
a couple of drinks
their only companion
one friend talking about
his life
The other
listening, learning
The world and time
pass by
But two friends just sit
On that worn wooden bench
With the words
Shan's Bench scrawled
on it

Like many things in life, the most obscure objects,
the most commonplace items, have some special
significance to it. Some memory tied to it. Some
emotion. And when explaining the significance of a
bench in front of Yonsei University with the words
"Shan's Bench" scrawled upon, I am at a loss for words.
I think that bench embodies numerous of memories and
emotions to me. My whole high school, but especially
my senior year can be linked to that bench and my
friends. To someone else, it's just a bench. Something
you would sit on just waiting for a bus. But to me that
"bench" is so much more. So if you're ever in Seoul
and you're ever in Shinchon, walk toward Yonsei
University and go towards the bus stop across the
street from the main university gate. Beside the
staircase near the bus stop, there is a bench, the
second one from the pavilion. Stop there, and just sit.
And watch. And then maybe you can understand.
