Puppet Master
------------------------
Lucifer, the light of God, was the sole angel who did not approve of his masters opus, the human creation. God had ordered his angels to bow down to his masterpiece, Adam, but Lucifer refused because he had already pledged himself to bow down to only God himself, for Lucifer loved God more than anything else. And so Lucifer was cast down into the abyss by Gods judgement, to be forever without his feeling of love for God. It was through hate and jealousy that Lucifer becomes Satan, the adversary of man, though not specifically of God. And it is his purpose to destroy man once and for all, no matter what steps he must take. That is the Seventh Legend of the Fall.
Ancient historians had scripts of God and his adversaries. Here, there exists the Sacred Goddess (G_O_D), Her balance (Lucifer), and Her judgment. Many have said that the Demon God, Valkair, may have been the angel that fell into the depths of hell, but Valkair denies the identities of Lucifer and Satan. And that leaves the question as to who is the true Seventh Legend of the Fall...

Kouryuu stared at the still figure of Terpfen in pure and utter hatred. Only the two of them remained behind at the hovercraft while the others ventured into town to buy some of the bare necessities needed for Yoshime and Iesu. Kouryuu did not want to stay with him, but she was too angry to do anything else. Rage never did mix well with her good judgment. Now she was stuck with his dormant figure, the very object of her hate. His emotionless eyes just stared at her. Nothing more. Nothing less. And she simply stared back with her two burning orbs of contempt. She would not forget what Terpfen had done to all those people, even if they were ones who had tried to kill them.
Terpfen suddenly turned his dead gaze to her, his body shifting only slightly to allow his head to move.
They were not UN forces? he said mechanically. He was referring to the day before, when he had nuked an entire Shirinkusu base in one blow.
Kouryuus head only shook slightly. She would not give him the benefit of her full effort to respond.
No, she breathed vehemently. This is not your time. We are not the people you think us to be, and neither were those soldiers whom you killed. She wanted so very badly to curse him freely, to simply rant and rave at him in a wild release of all of her anger. It pent up inside her, threatening to explode all at once. But she could probably do so without any fear of retaliation. Terpfen would not... no, could not care, he had no corazon chip.
This is the year 5643281 u.d.
This planet is not your planet as you know it; it is Akuji.
If you have any other memories from your past, then update them to the present.
You cannot kill innocent people under your idiotic presumptions.
Terpfens eyes never blinked.
Is that so...? he said, and turned his head forward again, staring off into a sea of nothingness. The UN... no longer exists? The war is over?
Kouryuu nodded blankly as she looked down at her shoes.
Yeah, she muttered. Your stupid war is over, but mine is just beginning... She doubted that Terpfen heard that last part. She doubted even more that he would care.
How can such a heartless creature exist?' she thought vehemently. Even the government has more compassion than that! At least they have a sense of feeling, however crude it was. It was just unnerving how Terpfen couldnt even respond with a different tone of voice. She still cant believe he did that. She didnt think shed ever be able to forgive him, not that hed care.
whats been getting into Edge lately?
Ever since the fight against the Tenshi-class cyborg, hes was becoming a lot more violent. Emotional. And those fighting techniques back at the Shirinkusu base. She never saw anything like it. It didnt seem like the character she had met back at the rebel base, the timid, untrained person who was just then beginning to venture out into the world. Maybe it was his corazon chip. How long has he had it? Could emotion develop that powerfully in a mech, or to such an extreme? Then again, she had her chip for over fifteen years, longer than any of the others have, so it probably has nothing to do with the duration of time---
---but Zero is an older model than me. She has emotions, but didnt she say that Terpfen was not quite as old as she was? And the corazon chip wasnt even invented yet in Terpfens era, so how is Zero able to act like a human without a corazon chip?
Banana, banana!!! shouted Zero happily as she jumped up and down, holding up the large yellow fruit in her hand. She was the only one besides Yoshime who was not holding a bag or container of purchased supplies. Double was shooting dirty looks at her while hefting his huge load. Zero just smiled as she unpeeled her newly acquired treat.
I didnt know that the corazon chip allows cyborgs to taste, said Yoshime as Zero popped the entire fruit into her mouth at once.
It doesnt, muttered Double.
Delicious!! grinned Zero, stilled having a bit of banana on the side of her mouth. Double grumbled something low and angry under his breath. Edge sighed off to the side. Iesu kept his mouth shut.
Oh yeah! exclaimed Yoshime. There was one more thing I wanted to do before we went back!
Eh? said Edge. You sure we have enough money? Kouryuu gave us all that she had. She probably wouldnt want us to waste it on something we dont need.
Yoshimes grin might as well have been the very epitome of sadism.
Who says were paying for anything? she said slyly.
Doubles eyebrows rose in a weird quirk and Edges eyes nearly burst out of his face.
What?! exclaimed Edge. You mean were going to st----mmph!!! The last part of Edges protest was cut off as Yoshime put her hand over his mouth.
Dont say it so loud! said Yoshime. She glanced about apprehensively at the crowd before wheeling on Edge. YES, maybe Ive stolen before, but thats not the issue right now! Doubles eyebrows arched a little higher. Before I had the benefit of your companionship, I had to fend for myself. Yeah, maybe I did have a couple friends back then, but we were still hungry! Friendship never cured any of that. So we helped each other get food and water, and all from the stinking government that put us out on the streets in the first place. It was what we had to do to stay alive, and thats what were doing right now. She looked about embarrassingly as her cheeks filled with red. Besides, this isnt exactly stealing. Were just protracting a service for free with the consent of the dealer, okay? So please dont say those things so loud. What were doing is perfectly safe. Edge nodded weakly and Yoshime removed her hand. Good, now lets go!
The small party merged with the milling crowd of shoppers and dealers, flowing into and out of the daily business of the town. Yoshime suddenly cut across to a small stand where several tall, dark-clad dealers stood.
Uh, said Edge. This thing youre doing isnt illegal is it?
Yoshime stuck out her tongue at him.
Of course not silly! she said. Dont worry. I only wanted to get a full check up analysis of your systems, especially since your abilities have substantially increased since we stayed at the rebel base. I cant do it by myself, so I figured Id just call up on a few friends I have in this part of Shirinkusu. She briskly walked up to a dealer cloaked in a black cape and oversized hat that shadowed his face.
Would you like an oil lube for your mechs, Miss? the figure asked in a low, garbled voice.
Cut it out, Takamaru, said Yoshime with a broad smile. I dont want you trying to rip out my spine with one of your little black market ploys. Besides, that synthesizer hardly suits you. The cape brushed aside to reveal a grinning young girl about as tall as Yoshime. The dark clothing and hat were held in place with a strange exoskeleton that was designed to be controlled by the smaller figure.
Heh! I never could fool you, Yoshime! said Takamaru. I havent seen you since the Republic rooted out my ring in their district! How goes life?
Not bad, said Yoshime. But the government finally caught up to me, and the old gang paid the price.
Ah, damn
Yeah, I know. Sometimes I think it was all my fault.
Nah, dont worry about it. Even if you never met them, the government still would have had their heads just beuse they were in the dregs like the rest of us. It aint your fault, Yoshime.
I suppose... but Ill always miss the good old days, ne Taka?
But of course!
Edge tried to watch the conversation but he found it troublesome to look over with his large bundle. De-gravitizing his load, he let his packages float above his head so that he could see what was going on. Takamaru jumped in surprise at the display of Edges ability.
A gravity user! exclaimed Takamaru. Ive heard rumors of the Republic trying to use that kind of power, but I never knew they went public with their product!
I doubt they did, said Yoshime. I just found Edge--- She gestured towards the green-haired mech. --- on my own. But hes just too nice to have ever been with those people. To the side, Double nudged Edge in the ribs and flashed him a dangerous grin. Edge stuck his right hand behind his head and laughed nervously when his floating bundle suddenly tumbled to the ground.
EDGE! shouted Yoshime. Why didnt you pay attention! Geez, you could tear up buildings if you wanted to, but... nevermind. Just let Taka do the scan. Edge meekly walked forward and was met by two other cloaked figures who lead him to the back of the stand. There stood a large metallic chair that was wired up to a nearby machine. Edge plopped himself down on the padded seat as the figures proceeded to strap his limbs to the mechanism. One of the figures tried to reach back to Edges neck to deactivate his systems but Edge lashed out with a low-powered gravity wave almost instinctively, holding the person in place. He still didnt know how reliable these people were. In his various conversations with Double, his companion had emphasized more than anything, not to trust anybody.
Yoshime suddenly entered the room and planted her hands on her hips when she saw what was going on. Damnit, Edge, she said. Its just a routine check that theyre giving you, no more, no less. She casually reached up to grab a fistful of Edges green bangs and tugged playfully. These people are my friends. Takas a good person. Shes helped me out before. Nothings going on here. Everything will be all right. Edge felt his power unravel as he smiled, and his grasp on the cloaked figure loosened and disappeared. This time, it was Yoshime who reached behind his head to shut down his system. She just smiled at him with that touch of innocence that always graced her face.
As she walked away and Edge felt himself relaxing, he picked up a small bit of conversation between Yoshime and Takamaru that involved the phrases hackers cpu board, got the stuff?, and black market. Hadnt Yoshime said she wouldnt do anything illegal?
The world suddenly faded out of existence...
...
...
...
There was nothing but darkness, a swirling black mob that engulfed Edge as he blindly floated about. He felt numb as he tried to find a firm grasp of anything to anchor himself to, but it was no use. He had been totally removed from the physical world.
Is this, my subconscious? No, it cant be. Im an android and androids dont have things like a subconscious. Besides, Im just letting Takamaru check my systems, right? I guess I could use a checkup after everything weve been through.
But then where am I right now?
Something suddenly tugged on Edges mind and he whirled about. In the distance, lines of light flashed back and forth like rays of sunlight trying to cut a path through the darkness. The tug became stronger and Edge felt himself being drawn towards the slashing beams. He didnt know how, but he slowly moved forward.
What is this feeling? Why am I drawn to this power?
As he drew closer, Edge made out the faint silhouette of a man---no, a man with wings, feathery wings. An angel? The figure wore a worn jacket about his upper torso and his travelers pants that were deeply creased with the wear of experience. His handsome face was framed by dark bangs of hair, an imposing effect when combined with the mans height. The light that Edge had seen was coming from the huge 6-foot samurai style blade that the man was whirling in and out of its scabbard as he changed from stance to stance. The light was not being reflected off the sword itself. Instead, the weapon seemed to be emitting it on its own accord. The man suddenly whirled the blade into its sheath as he ended his routine in a stance with his back turned towards Edge. His wings glowed softly as he stood up.
Edge, said the man. The young boy started violently as he suddenly realized that he was no more than six or seven meters from this mysterious person that he did not recognize.
Y... yes, said Edge cautiously. How did you know my name? Who are you?
The man turned around slowly. His face held a mysterious smile.
I know many things that you are not meant to know. For now, you may call me Adam. I see your power aura responded to my own. Edges eyes widened a little as he stared down at his hands. Was that tug he felt from before that? No. He couldnt have anything of the sort. He was an android. You dont believe me, do you? said Adam. Of course not, why should I expect you to? You do things even you dont understand, like the way you were able to fly through the government base accompanied by those seismic waves you activated.
Edge stared up incredulously, his eyes glittering with a mixture of hatred and terror. How much did this man know?
I didnt mean to---I mean, it wasnt my fault!!! shouted Edge. I just wanted to save Yoshime.
Of course you did, said Adam. I can relate to your feelings, for I once had a mortal life as well. I am not here to threaten you, Edge. I am here to teach you.
I dont need anybody to help me! said Edge. I dont even know who you are, and I have Yoshime to teach me everything.
Even she cannot teach you how to become human. You are meant for much greater things than you shall ever realize. That is why you must go the Temple of Ordeal. There, you shall find what you are looking for.
Edge took a wary step back as he tried to grasp his power. This man knew about the Temple too. What about the Orb? About Terpfen? About the government? About every single thing that he had ever done? What about his own past?
You need to understand far more than you do now, said Adam, his white wings fluttering down behind him. I am bound my honor to keep the silence about the threads of fate---
---so fate does exist? interrupted Edge. I am bound to this world by a force against my will?
Adams face creased in frustration.
Fate exists only if you will it to. The ancient prophecies have not yet come true, but they shall soon...
And what prophecies are these? asked Edge.
Adams image suddenly blurred and faded into the darkness, his mouth still moving as his speech turned from a whisper to nothing. Edge tried to rush forward to catch him but it felt as though he were stuck in a massive vat of immobile jelly.
No! I could have learned something, I could have found out something about what this damn world is about!!!
...
...
I...
I really know nothing about this world
Akuji...
do I?
I know nothing about the way life works. I only think I do. I dont understand why Yoshime is happy or sad, why she cries and hugs me for comfort, why shes willing to follow me on this journey to the Temple of Ordeal. Why? Even the others understand more than I do, Double with his vast explorations of the world, Kouryuu having worked around humans almost every day of her life, Zero with more experience than any of us. Maybe Terpfen is the only one who doesnt understand anything, but thats because he doesnt have a corazon chip. He has an excuse. I dont. I cant even remember my past.
Edge suddenly felt another tug in his mind and looked cautiously about as the space shimmered with the distortion of the gravitational spectrum, a simple precaution of his own doing. Electricity sparkled in the air as the darkness suddenly changed into a huge canvas of red and blue. The world seemed to turn upside down for a moment before righting itself on a firm foothold. Silence clung to the air as he waited patiently for a sign of attack.
You must stay away from Adam. No good can come of his presence.
Edge suddenly found himself standing before a man cloaked in a long trenchcoat, his face hidden by the shadows of his long bangs of hair. His entire body seemed to be one living silhouette, but at the same time he radiated a mysterious aura of power that Edge could not explain.
Dont step into what you do not understand, said the man. That is how many a great hero has found his death.
Whats going on? muttered Edge, making sure his grasp of power was firm. Who are you people? What do you want?!
The dark man never flinched. Instead, the colors behind him seemed to shift in synch with his tone. Dont be foolish, boy! If you understood even half of the power that Adam holds youll fear for your very existence, as well as those of your friends.
And so I should trust you instead, right? Edges voice held a strong hint of sarcasm as he spat out the words. He was angry at not knowing who his adversary was, at being ignorant of why these people were here and what they wanted. He vulnerable. Afraid. This was just a routine check, right? How were these entities invading his mind? What had he done to their attention?
I dont expect you to trust anybody, said the man. I am here to help you because I need a favor that you and your group are capable of pulling off.
A deal. That was what this ghost wanted.
And what favor is that?
The mans head lifted slightly before he responded. Edge could see the brightness in his eyes, a light only emphasized more so by the darkness in his face.
You know of the Temple of Ordeal. Edge stifled his gasp of surprise. How many people were aware that the legend of the Temple was actually true? I need to visit there. I know that you too are seeking this destination and I shall be more than willing to help you on your journey.
Edge paused for a moment, suddenly realizing how much power that he was holding onto as he watched an electricity bolt the size of his arm float upward in front of his face. Reluctantly, he tried to lessen the intensity of the gravitational electricity field he held around him.
You are powerful, Edge, said the man. I have knowledge that would be helpful in training one such as yourself.
The colors suddenly turned black again, then to a snowy static of black and white as something tried to pull Edge out of the world. Takamaru must have finished with his systems check and now she was trying to reactivate him. Edge watched in desperation as the man grew small in his vision, himself being pulled back into the real world.
Not yet! I need to know just what Im facing! And maybe that man can teach me something about myself, something that I dont yet understand. He said that that Adam is dangerous. Maybe he can help with other things as well. He obviously knows something that I dont. But... but...!
I dont even know your name!!! shouted out Edge as the world turned to chaos about him.
I am Clef, said the man. He said it plainly and without effort, but it still reached Edges range of hearing with ease. I shall see you again soon.
...
...
...
Your mech sucks, Yoshime. The damn thing just shorted out my probes!
NO! Help put out the fire guys!
What?! I didnt do anything... wonder what this does...
ACK~! Stupid, stupid, stupid! Dont touch that Double!!!
Edge woke up groggily to find the Takamarus entire stand in chaos. Fire had taken hold of the machinery and Takas cloaked employees were in a bustle trying to put it out. Zero was rushing back and forth with buckets of water and Yoshime was smacking Double on the head for something he just did.
Seeing that Edge was awake, Yoshime dashed over and began removing his restraints.
Are you okay? she asked wildly. Takas machines burst out in flame and her programs got rejected by your system! What happened?
Edge rubbed the back of his head as he tried to focus on the young girl in front of him.
I dont know. I cant tell what happened... He was still trying to figure out everything he saw back in the darkness. Adam. Clef. Who were they? What did they want? Why were they following him and why did they appear during his check up? Then again, Takamarus equipment did go berserk. Maybe it was all a dream... if androids could dream...
A small explosion suddenly engulfed Double as the red android tried to turn off a piece of machinery.
YOU IDIOT!!! shouted Yoshime as she dashed over to help Double out of the blaze. Cant you do anything right?! I dont care how much you have to work your ass off, but youre replacing all of Taka-chans stuff, you hear me?! Even from where he was standing, Edge could hear Doubles groan of discontent.
[Hmm... interesting. I take it that these are your companions?]
Edge jerked violently at hearing the echoing voice in his head. It was the voice of the shadowed man in his visions. Clef.
Wh--what are you doing here?! thought Edge. I thought you were just---
[In your head? I am not an illusion, Edge. In fact, I am a being created of pure data and knowledge, a computer code floating on the surface of life. As for what Im doing here, I have yet to see if you shall accept my proposition.]
Proposition?
[Of course. My help in exchange for your guidance to the Temple of Ordeal.]
Edge paused for a moment. How could he be sure that he could trust him ? Could he trust anybody for that matter?
How do I know youre not just using me...? questioned Edge.
[If you need proof of my loyalties, then I shall give them to you. I think you should first know that the little disturbance in your friends merchant stand is the result of a kinetic energy pulse field, which has nothing to do with your state or your companions mechanical ineptitude. At this very moment, I believe that you should find others in similar peril.]
Edge concentrated back on the real world, stepping out of Takamarus stand and looking around. Sure enough, the entire market was in a bundle of chaos with wares breaking spontaneously and mechanisms bursting into flames. His body jerked to a stop as he looked up in the sky, a huge black orb hovering above the entire scene, dwarfing the buildings down below. Huge plates of armor covered its flanks with sharp projections curving around in the front. At its head, three white stars were tattooed in as its eyes, soft light pulsing within their cores that mimicked the pattern of destruction down below.
What the hell is that?! said Edge.
Zero suddenly skidded to a stop beside the green-haired android and looked up at the floating spectacle. A Shiken! she said. It has to be, its energy signature is just too similar to the other ones! They always pick the worst times to come!
[Hmm... Shiken... is that what you call them?]
Zeros face lit up in surprise and she glanced at Edge.
Did you say something Edge? she asked.
Edge shook his head with his eyes still on the sky above.
Can everybody else hear you too, Clef?
[Everybody I want to hear me can do so. However, I suggest you leave the introductions until later and focus on the problem at hand.]
...
...
...
Kouryuus eyes bulged when she saw the huge orb floating above the city. Terpfen never moved a muscle, calmly waiting by the hovercrafts side as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.
...what in the world is that? said Kouryuu nervously.
Its a biological entity that is emitting a class 5 energy field of an unreadable source. It is of a spherical shape with a radius of approximately 200 meters, a surface area of approximately 502654.824574 square meters, an area of approximately 33510321.6383 cubed---
That isnt what I meant! shouted Kouryuu. I think that thing is headed in the direction where Yoshime and the others were going. We need to stop it before it starts hurting innocent--- Kouryuu caught herself in mid-sentence. Terpfen had no corazon chip. She might as well have been talking to a toaster oven. Grumbling to herself as she set the security lock on the hovercraft, Kouryuu flipped her blades into her palms and ran towards the city. Hurry up, you bucket of bolts. Get your ass in gear! We have a city to save!
Terpfen didnt even shrug as he lumbered after her.
...
...
...
Screaming people suddenly disappeared off the streets as Zero snatched them up and carried them to safety. Edge was busy gathering his energy, but had a hard time doing so. The huge Shiken only loomed closer, stolid and unrelenting.
^GIVE US IESU^
The creatures voice sounded loud enough to vibrate Edges armor right off his body, but he held his position. Double was suddenly at his side with blades bared. Iesu and Yoshime were back in the stand with Takamaru, still trying to calm the random destruction inflicted upon the equipment.
Are all the civilians out of the way, Zero? asked Edge.
Zero grinned and nodded wildly.
Yup! Can we blow something up now?
[You arent going to destroy anything the way youre going, Edge.]
Doubles eyes twitched involuntarily as he glanced at Edge. Zeros blank look said that she had also heard Clefs retort.
Edge... started Double. Did you just say something?
Edge sighed and shook his head. How was he going to explain Clef to his friends?
Ill explain later, he said. Right now, we have bigger problems to concentrate on. Were short on manpower with Kouryuu back at the hovercraft, but hopefully shell notice all the commotion and bring along Terpfen for extra firepower.
Double nodded with a curt grin.
Then we dont have any other choice right now but to take it on! His legs uncoiled as he leapt up to one of the nearby buildings in a flash of light, and Zero was suddenly a red blur as she did the same. Edge bent the gravity fields around him so he could fly upwards and join his companions, but it suddenly seemed as though a mountain had been placed on his head, quadrupling the needed effort for the task. By the time Edge made it to the top of the first building, it felt as though half of his energy reserves had been drained.
[You are a stubborn one, arent you? Why wont you believe me?]
I have no reason to believe you, Clef, said Edge, but his hard tone was weakened by the drain on his body. Clefs sigh echoed blindly through his head.
[Look long and hard for one moment at this situation. Scan the type of energy that the Shiken is emitting. I know you have the equipment in that government-processed body of yours, so just do it.]
Edge grumbled under his breath as he ran a quick scan of the black orb before him.
Its some sort of biological being, he said. ... t IS releasing a kinetic pulse energy field, just like you said.
[...]
...but theres something weird about it, said Edge. Something familiar. I almost looks as though its siphoning the grravitational spectrum...
[---And transforming that power into a physical force.]
Edge stood silent for a moment, looking down at the palms of his hands. Thats why its taking me twice the effort I usually need to use my powers, because the Shiken is stealing the source of my energy supply.
[Its something close to that, but youre not too far off from the real answer. Now do you see what youre doing wrong?]
Edge shook his head at the air.
No, I dont, he said. What am I supposed to do if I cant use my powers?
[Its not that you cant use your powers, its just that youre focusing on the wrong target. Think about it. The Shiken needs to draw energy into itself in order to transform it into kinetic force. However, your powers work on a different level because you dont need to directly touch your source of power in order to use it.]
I think I see what you mean... said Edge.
[Good, then youre not as completely helpless some might have thought you were. Now while your companions do their best to distract the creature, Im going to give you a little plan...]
...
...
...
Kouryuu bounded over the rooftops, sparing a single glance down to watch the mobs of panicking people trample each other in a desperate attempt to save their own hides. Behind her, Terpfen was using some sort of internal thrusters to fly alongside her, a very old fashioned, but effective, flight system. Very polluting. Not that the government made any efforts to improve the environments anyways. Supposedly, Akuji had been abundant in flora and fauna before the Nuclear Cataclysm, even though those past situations had often been referred to as the brink of ecological disaster. Now even so much as a weed was considered a miracle of nature, at least to the common citizen. The rich government always had their resources spread out for them at a moments notice.
The view of the huge black orb smacked the rebel back to reality.
I trust that you can handle something as trivial as random destruction, Terpfen? she said.
The hulking android never once turned its head.
Understood, Kouryuu, he said. The mission is to neutralize the target as quickly as possible.
Kouryuu grimaced and glared at Terpfen.
You better make sure that you get two things in your head before you go off blowing things up. First of all, the target is that huge orb thats causing all the disturbance. Second, you will not kill any innocent people no matter what the cost! Even if it means your own untimely demise! Kouryuu added a full slur of sarcasm on the last words, but Terpfen only nodded.
Understood, he said plainly. Not a single word more.
Kouryuu almost felt shocked by his quick response. She was not used to working with machines. She never was. Sure, she learned things in her time with the rebels, but she never liked or really appreciated any of it. Perhaps that was why she never bothered to try to learn things such as driving. The huge irony of the entire situation was that she herself was an android
A red blur caught her eye ahead of her. She immediately knew that Double and Zero must already be engaged in the fight. Motioning to Terpfen, Kouryuu increased her velocity across the rooftops. You had better be able to fight a lot more effectively than you can converse, she muttered bitterly.
Zeros fist rebounded off the Shikens armored flank like rubber as she flew through the air, and the monster was left untouched. Double stood below on a rooftop in the creatures path.
That damned creature hasnt done a thing yet, he said. It just keeps moving closer to Takas stand
MOU~! whined Zero. None of my attacks are working! What is this thing made of?!
Double simply stared up at the huge creature.
Well, I havent had a chance to attack it yet, he said. But I cant really jump that high either. Youll have to give me a lift Zero.
Hehheh! No problem! grinned the pigtailed girl. Double felt himself involuntarily stiffen up as she grabbed his arm and swung him around like a rag doll.
HEY! he shouted, flailing about trying to reach solid earth again. This isnt exactly what I had in min---- He trailed off as he suddenly realized that Zero had hurled him right straight at the three stars on the Shikens front side, his sleek form rocketing towards the beast so fast that he had hardly noticed the release. Ah well, he muttered. At least Im getting what I asked for!!! His arms suddenly transformed into huge blades as closed in on his target. An grin of delight painted his face as he brought both arms down with all the force he could muster. Die!
The world suddenly went white in front of the assassin and he instinctively jerked his arms over his face for protection. For a brief moment, his sensors went blank, unable to read the environment around him, and he felt panic waft up into his mind,
What the--?! he sputtered, but was cut off by a sudden crash of force in his gut, his abdomen crumpling up like a paper as he doubled over and jerked to a stop in midair. It took all of his effort and concentration just to keep his body in one piece, and as he flew down back towards the ground below, he did his best to stifle an involuntary noise that ripped at his vocal box, his insides rolling over upon themselves as he sailed down into the abyss below.
...
...
...
Damnit! said Kouryuu as she watched Doubles body fall from the sky like a stone. He always had been a headstrong bastard, never did the thing that held the most common sense. Couldnt wait for help, always had to leap right into the eye of the storm. Maybe it was something in his programming.
She shook her head in mid-stride, cursing at having let her mind wander again. She had a job to do.
Let's go! she shoutedto Terpfen, and the heavy-plated robot nodded in acknowledgement. Bending her legs deep beneath her, Kouryuu felt her body rebound from the suddenly burst of kinetic energy as she leapt off of the nearest roof and careened high into the air. From her viewpoint, Kouryuu spied Terpfen off to side holding one of those same glowing balls that he had used to destroy the Shirinkusu base.
NO NUKES! she roared through a mental thought. Terpfen actually stopped and turned his head in her direction this time. She swore that he was giving her a dirty look on his cold face, but she simply stared back with all the hatred in the world. Cant you understand anything? I said no harming innocent people! Cant you---HEY!!!
Terpfen hadnt even bothered to put lower his hand. In fact, he had just released the glowing sphere to float up near the monstrous black ball floating in the distance. Kouryuus fists clenched tighter and tighter around the hilt of her blade until she felt as if her hand might fall apart. She was going to kill him. Even as she felt herself descending from the drop, swords were twirling in his open hands in preparation to cut off Terpfens head. Suddenly spying a bright flash of light in the direction of her original target, Kouryuu turned to stare at the spectacle of the huge black orb. Terpfens small ball of light had practically been absorbed by the huge circle of darkness, but a huge transparent cylander with an octagonal base and walls that reached into the clouds had suddenly surrounded the monster in a field of blue energy. The container glowed softly, but the creature trapped inside did nothing. Suddenly, the entire interior of the cylinder went white with the blinding flash of Terpfens nuke, and the energy released spiraled up in the container, a massive pillar of purity unveiled. As the residue cleared, the blue walls flickered away and disappeared. The black orb was still floating there, apparently unharmed.
I can contain the force and radiation factors to cover a limited area, said Terpfen, abruptly knocking Kouryuu out of a daze. She had not even remembered landing from her aerial trip, she had been too busy staring at the scene before her. Once the explosion has been cleared, continued Terpfen. My energy barriers can break down any radiation leftover into a harmless element. As a safety precaution, the remaining nuclear substances are channeled beyond the planets atmosphere as a precaution. No humans are hurt in the process.
Kouryuu fumed angrily but couldnt find any words to fit the situation. And how could she? Terpfen had followed her orders to the last word. No humans were hurt He went after the enemy. What could she say?
Apparently, my attack had little effect on the selected target, said Terpfen suddenly. Sensors indicate an energy build up in the targets core. Attack is probable. Evasive action suggested. Kouryuu whipped her head around to stare at the huge orb. It had rotated about so that a side with three white stars imprinted on the front faced them.
^YOU ARE ALL FOOLS. GIVE US IESU^
Kouryuus eyes buldged in stark shock.
Shiken! she exclaimed, but could say nothing more. A huge tentacle of white glowing energy had shot out from the black orbs armored flank and shot out upon the ground to snatch them up into utter oblivion, tearing everything in its path to pieces.
Zero whisked Double out of the way as she watched the huge pillar of light engulf the Shiken. Behind the orb, she spied a huge limb of glowing energy chase after Kouryuu and Terpfen. At least backup had finally arrived.
Damnit, put me down, grumbled Double, suddenly alive and struggling in her arms. Im not that bad off. Just give me a minute to recover.
Zero sniffed at the air in reply. Youd be lucky if you could move a day from now. I see that your energy level has been halved. Double shot her a dirty look that held a tinge of shock. She smiled. She enjoyed taunting him with the skills that he didnt know she had. How had she known that anyways? Not that it mattered all too much right now, shed think about it later. Here, go have fun down there!
Double suddenly found himself free falling from Zeros hold. It took him a few seconds of wild flailing before realizing that he was nearing the rooftops. Flipping about and landing lightly on the solid building top, he took the chance to shoot another angered look at the pigtailed girl before she flew away. She giggled under her breath as she spared a glance in his direction. Double really was funny, wasnt he? He never even noticed it for himself, but then that was what made the whole situation so hilarious.
Gliding along the rooftops on invisible footholds of air, Zero watched as time suddenly slowed about her to a near crawl. Kouryuus frantic dodging from building to building became a graceful ballad of tumbling. Terpfens minimal sidesteps slowed to where it almost looked as if the robot was merely standing in place. Zero climbed invisible stairs as her weight became nearly nothing with her incredible velocity. She rode the air as effortlessly as if it were ground, if not better. Dashing up to the Shikens black hide, she charged all her energy into her fist and a glowing ball of red flame suddenly engulfed her arm.
Faiyabouru!!! she shouted happily as she slammed her knuckles into the creature. Recoiling from the blow, Zero took the opportunity to ride the air backwards to observe her handiwork. The Shiken was not even scratched.
Eh?! Why? whined Zero. Nothing happened! Whats wrong with my attack? A second tentacle of energy suddenly burst from the other side of the monster and raced in Zeros direction. It moved with the same incredible speed that she did.
^WE ARE SHIKEN. WE WANT IESU. YOU PROTECT HIM. WE SHALL KILL YOU ALL^
Incredible, breathed Edge. Every circuit of his being pulsed with energy as he connected himself to the gravitational spectrum of Akuji. The eyes and ears of the world were suddenly his to utilize. His to see and hear. His.
[Do you see what I mean now, Edge?]
Clefs voice was a deafening boom in his head with his senses enhanced as they were.
[You underestimate your own capabilities. Remember, the gravitational field is a weapon that you can wield almost anywhere. The possibilities are limitless.]
I see, said Edge. Strangely enough, his own power source was barely being depleted. Instead, Clef had just shown him how to draw and twist the magnetic spectrum to do all the work for him. And this was only one step. How much could he draw? How much could he channel if he tried? I think your plan just might work. Shall we begin?
[Yes. Lets do so.]
Retreat? exclaimed Kouryuu. Edge wants me to retreat?! She had received his radio transmission just seconds ago. At least the fool had been smart enough to realize that information on an standard pulse wouldnt work with all the static that the Shiken was putting out. But what right did Edge have to tell her to retreat? He hadnt even joined the fight yet. Still, she couldnt argue with his sense when there was little more that she could do but try to stay alive.
Fall back! shouted Kouryuu to Terpfen. Were not doing any good playing this things target. Maybe Edge has some sort of plan. Terpfens minimal nod showed agreement and the two immediately backpeddled across the rooftops.
^WE ARE SHIKEN. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE^
Escape eh? panted Zero as she faked to the right. The wavering beam that followed her narrowly missed clipping off an arm as it proceeded to tear straight through several buildings in its path. She was nearly down to a fifth of her energy reserves, she could not last much longer. Heh, escape sounds pretty good right about now.
Double was still whirling his head about below, trying to figure out what just tore up the structures that were standing just seconds ago. His slow movement suddenly broke as Zero plucked him up and dashed for the edge of town.
Cmon Double! she shouted. Were checking out of here! She could almost swear that his mouth was trying to shout some vile curse, but she concentrated on her destination. She had left the range of the Shikens attack, but something still worried her.
^WE ARE SHIKEN. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE. WE SHALL KILL YOU ALL^
Its building up kinetic energy in its core, recited Terpfen to Kouryuu.
Just like it did when it tried to attack us with that whip-like flail? said Kouryuu.
Correct. This creature is able to siphon kinetic substance and transform it into solid form.
And now its charging up for the final blow, trailed off the rebel. She hadnt accounted on anything like this. She hoped that the young boy had a very good plan.
Yoshime stared up at Edges floating figure with worry. What was he trying to do? He hadnt even entered the fight yet, and he actually looked like he was talking to himself! The dolt.
Dashing out into the streets with Iesu and Takamaru close on her heels, Yoshime planted herself firmly in place and looked up to Edge. Her Edge.
Edge!!! she shouted. What are you doing?! When Edge looked down at her, his face was painted with a horror that was clear as day.
Yoshime, sputtered Edge. I...I forgot all about her...
[She will get in the way, you realize. You should have considered her and her friends beforehand. Theres nothing you can do now if you want this plan to work.]
Clefs voice was almost sorrowful.
NO!!! said Edge. I wont let that happen. I can still defeat the Shiken, protect the city, and save Yoshime at once.
[Even with the tricks Ive taught you, youre stretching your limits. Your power will run out. You could die.]
Fine! said Edge. Ill die, but at least Ill have tried.
In front of him, the Shiken suddenly glowed bright, a blinding purple aura filling the sky. A sudden flash of bright light accompanied the release of a circular energy wave that quickly radiated outward in every direction from the black orb, rippling through walls with sheer force, tearing them out of their foundations with a touch. Looking down, Edge saw Yoshimes face framed in fear. He couldnt let her die. He couldnt. He wouldnt.
I have to protect her, said Edge over the din of noise. He gathered everything he had, looking up at the impending wave of destruction that swept his way with desperation in his eyes. I HAVE TO!!!
All the energy that he had been holding burst from his body as he focused a powerful vacuum in the center of the Shikens being, the circular wave suddenly trembling as the opposing force began to drag down its path. A huge dome of sparkling electromagnetic energy wove itself around the struggling monster and the energy wave as his power attempted to suck both in upon themselves in a virtual black hole. The thundering field swallowed them whole, sealing off the city on the outside as a storm began to brew within. Far below, a smaller dome wove around the small group of humans standing in the middle of the street, protecting them from the flying debris. Had Edge looked down, he would have seen Yoshimes glittering visage staring up at him in pride and affection.
Oh my God trailed of Kouryuu. She simply stared at the massive purple dome in silence. Through its semi-transparent walls she could see the twining forces of energy flow as the Shiken resisted Edges power. The energy wave wavered back and forth constantly, always on the brink of breaking free of the domes limited range and wrecking havoc on the city. She simply stared at it, unable to do anything else.
Interesting, commented Terpfen. Multiple weaves of gravitational energy interlaced with electromagnetic force. One field to implode the target, the other designed to protect the surrounding area from the implosion. Ingenious.
Kouryuu, what the hells going on here?!
Doubles coarse shout reached Kouryuus ears just as he and Zero skidded to a stop beside them. The assassin angrily waved his arms at the shuddering cataclysm before them.
What brought this on?! he shouted. This is way beyond a skirmish. This is an all out WAR!!! Not even that first Shiken was this bad! I mean, look at this!!! Double tried desperately to stutter on, but the words were suddenly gone from his mouth. Kouryuu just nodded blindly and stared upward.
KOURYUU!!!
Kouryuu shook with the sudden voice in her head. It was Edge.
I need your help, relayed Edge to his friends on the outskirts of town. Yoshime, Iesu, Takamaru, and a few others are still trapped here. They never got out, and theres no time left to do it now!
Damn! cursed Kouryuu. Well, you have the Shiken trapped, dont you? I thought you were going to kill the it before it did any more damage.
I cant! said the young boy. I dont have the power to spare. The field I designed around the Shiken contains the vacuum I created, but it doesnt save any debris that might get reflected across the gravity field and ricochet out. The only reason why Yoshime and the others arent hurt right now is because Ive erected a force field around them too, but now I dont have the reserves needed to complete the black hole.
[If you let the girl go, you could kill the Shiken easily.]
Edge ignored Clefs comment the best he could and continued on.
Im holding out fine right now, but the Shikens power is resisting me. In another couple of minutes, the kinetic energy wave will escape my range. Im not sure if my force field is strong enough to counter that.
What do you suggest we do? said Kouryuu somberly.
Edge tried to smile despite all his stress.
The field around the Shiken is designed to contain gravitational power from escaping, but that doesnt mean that other things cant get in.
[Youre a fool if you think this will work. Dont kill yourself over this.]
What are you getting at, Edge? questioned Kouryuu.
He grinned now, something almost malicious, but at the same time, sly.
Youre going to have to trust me on this one... or rather, Double will.
He wants me to WHAT?! shouted Double. No! Absolutely not! I refuse to do it! I mean, I like the kid, but this is just---
Just shut up, will you?! roared Kouryuu. To her surprise, the killer shut his mouth rather abruptly. She hoped that he would become used to the interruptions. Do you think maintaining that field is easy for Edge? Hes taking the full brunt of the battle this time. Besides, Yoshime, Iesu, Taka, and Takas assistants are still caught in the middle of that maelstrom. They will definitely die without assistance, and theyre counting on us to give it.
Doubles eyes stiffened in their sockets.
Yoshime never got out? he said nervously. It was a superfluous question. He already knew the answer.
Shes in there, said Kouryuu. The only thing keeping her from getting her head smashed in by a flying chunk of building is Edges shield, and hes not going to be able to last much longer.
Double was no longer the boisterous block of arrogance that he had been just seconds before. He turned his back to Kouryuu, taking in a long stare at the bubble of smoldering blue in front of him. The Shiken glowed an unearthly white in its center.
Well then, said Double abruptly. When do we start?
...
...
...
[I see you like to take chances, Edge. However, there is a large difference between bravery and futility.]
Clefs voice was but a soft whisper in Edges head. He desperately tried to ignore it. His own body was being bombarded by the back-blast force of his own channeling. His armor felt as if it were going to be shaken into dust by the power of the vibrations running up his arms.
Im not trying to be brave, grunted Edge.
[Then just what are you trying to be? A martyr? You have potential undreamed of, my dear boy. I could teach you so many things if you would just let me. You do not need the companionship of this mere human.]
Maybe its just a part of my computer speaking, he said. The part of me that pledged long ago that I would follow and serve Yoshime Ozaki, protect her from harm, help her find the things in this world that she wanted.
[... humans have a word for that. They call it---*]
Clefs voice was drowned out by the extreme pressure that suddenly washed over Edge. The Shiken was getting stronger.
^WE ARE SHIKEN. YOU PROTECT THE ONE KNOWN AS IESU. YOU SHALL PERISH IN THE LIGHT OF OBLIVION WITH THE COMING OF THE SECOND BREAKING OF THE WORLD^
...
...
...
Please tell me theres some other way to do this, grumbled Double. Terpfens a big guy, isnt he strong enough to do the job?
You cant argue with simple mathematics, said Kouryuu. Terpfen is strong enough to toss you into that energy dome, but your velocity wont be high enough to avoid the debris. You'd be smashed as soon as you got in there, so Zero will have to do.
Double muttered something under his breath as he held out his left arm to the ecstatic Zero.
Please be careful, he said. Id like my arm back in one piece.
HAI~~~~~!bellowed the pigtailed girl as she grabbed his arm around the gauntleted wrist. Kouryuu and Terpfen took a protective step back as the pair readied themselves.
The assassin managed to force a slight grin on his face as he took a slight hop into the air. Time suddenly slowed to a mere crawl.
Okay! he shouted. Lets do this!
The world turned into a whirlwind of blurs as Zero began to spin in place, swinging Double around in full 360 degree arcs of crimson they began to blur into the air. Within the contained cyclone of pressure, Double felt the wind resistance try to force the molecules of his armor from his body, but he stubbornly held on. He whirled about faster and faster until he realized that he could no longer hear anything. Mach one, mach two, Mach four. Sound began to echo in the distance and he suddenly realized that he was no longer accelerating. Zero was taking aim.
URYAAAA~! shouted Zero as she suddenly flung him outwards. It took a mere second for Double to realize that he was headed in the direction of the huge energy bubble, another second to realize that he had penetrated it, and a third to remember what he had to do. Rocks and debris flew at him in torrents from all sides, redirected by his massive enemy before him, but Doubles body went untouched as his incredible speed carried him through even the whole half of a building, arms whirling about in slight movements to knock the pieces of the broken city just enough to get them out of his path of flight. Thrusting out his arms in front of him and streamlining his legs behind, Double formed a spear of pure boiling mercury as he headed straight for the spheres center. Yet somehow, he found time to grin within the blur of time.
Playtime is over, he grinned. And then he struck.
The white fire of Doubles blade pierced deep into the monsters tough hide, and the monster let out a bestial scream of pain as its black side broke apart like thick shards of glass. Double used his momentum to start spinning, and in moments he had transformed into a tornado of whipping swords, each one cutting deeper and deeper into the monsters core, digging into the very heart of his foe. Black meat tore away like butter under the mercy of his hot knife, and suddenly the only thing that he felt himself cutting was air. He had sliced clean through the entire beast.
His speed carried him out of the hurricane of stones, out of the gravity bubble and into the streets of the city. Twisting his body downwards, he morphed his feet into sharp stakes as he dug them into the ground and dragged himself to a stop. It must have taken him at least a full kilometer before his momentum wore out, never even feeling the buildings he crashed through. Finally finding himself on his knees in the dusty streets at the edge of town, he grinned, turning around to admire his handiwork. The blue bubble slowly faded away as the Shiken let out yet another piercing scream and began to fall to the ground. As soon as the huge sphere came in contact with the dirt below, the entire creature combusted into a fiery white pillar of light that extended up into the sky, and in the background of the flaming destruction was lay the sharp structures of fallen buildings and steel frames left behind in its wake. The golden sunset over purple mountains created the perfect background for the creature's death, lending its falling light over the corpses of the town.

...
Edge touched town lightly on the barren ground below as the protective force field around Yoshime and her companions dissipated. He stared at her disparagingly, both anger and worry touching his corazon chip.
Why did she stay? Didnt she understand anything? She could get hurt in these fights. She wasnt supposed to get hurt... it would be his fault for not protecting her... this is not what she deserves. This is not her trip, and he had forced her to come along. He was the one forcing her into danger, wasnt he?
[And so you finally come to the realization that you, like every other sentient being in the world, the universe, is selfish.]
Clefs words rang in Edges mind like a gong and touched his metal armor like ice.
What? thought Edge silently. What are you talking about?
[This journey is yours, not hers. You are traveling to the Temple of Ordeal because you want to find your precious meaning of humanity. You have finally realized that you are leading these others on an excursion for your own purposes. They benefit none, though they shall receive just as much pain as you do. You are greedy, Edge. Perhaps you are more human than you think you are.]
The young boy would have shivered if his body was capable of doing so. As Yoshime slowly walked up to greet him, he desperately tried to push Clefs thoughts out of his head.
Edge, she said softly. ... are you all right?
Edge nodded solemnly, and Yoshime suddenly threw her hands about his neck and began to cry. Edge looked down, stupified. He had never seen Yoshime like this, not the hard, battle-worn Yoshime who had tried her best to stare down Shiken, or retrieve an amulet in the heat of a battle. There had been only one other time, back when she had seen the corpses of her friends. He remembered sadness, he remembered losing a loved one. He remembered that pain all too well.
I was worried for you, she said, nuzzling her wet face into the red steel of his breastplate. I didnt know you could use that much energy at once... youre getting so strong. Ever since... when? I forget, its been a while, hasnt it? Its been a while... She trailed off as she hugged him, her tears having stopped. What more could he do but hold her and comfort her?
Edgte looked up at the bewildered Takamaru and Iesu. The latters face was calm on the outside, but he could sense a smoldered rage burning within. Why did Iesu stare at him like that? He simply did not understand.
[You will in time, Edge. You will in time...]
Yoshimes head suddenly snapped up and looked about nervously. In seconds, she had transformed back into her old apprehensive self. Edge could never understand how humans changed emotions so quickly.
What was that noise? she asked. I heard a buzz on my comm-link, voices, but I couldnt make it out clearly.
[Im sorry about that. Ive re-adjusted my frequency levels to something that your equipment will pick up more clearly. Its a pleasure to meet you, Yoshime Ozaki. I am Clef.]

Edge was getting more powerful, more developed than Toy could have ever imagined. Was he wrong in thinking to kill him? The only living gravity prototype left, was this some sort of twisted fate? Perhaps Edge should be retrieved, subdued, brought in for further analysis. He could study his systems, duplicate them, create the perfect soldier for the purposes he needed to carry out.
And yet, somehow, Toy felt as though no matter how much scientific analysis he carried out on Edge, he would never be able to find the certain thing that made his projects so essential. Or perhaps it would be that he found nothing more than an excessive item in the package, something he had never intended to exist...
Toys computers suddenly went off all at once, but all it took was a simple mental thought to access his data banks. He detected a foreign program, something big. Toys eyes widened in surprise and eager violence.
No... he whispered. He cant interfere with my project, not now, not with Edge! He is mine to determine where his destiny may lie. Mine!
A creature on the computer screen in his minds eye, a single red blip of unidentified information. Yet, he knew it before his systems could even begin to identify.
Clef.
Its data strain was little more than a huge strain of pure information, a clump of incomprehensible gibberish without meaning. It was familiar, something he had witnessed once before in a life long forgotten. But it couldnt be. Not after all this time. He couldnt believe this, HE shouldnt be here! Why? All of his plans would be ruined if... if...
This Clef must be eliminated. Now.
...
Another blink of an eye and a specially designed termination virus suddenly spiraled out of Toys encoded memory to eliminate the threat. It would only be a matter of time now...
...
...
...
Interesting, said Yoshime as she indulged herself in studying Clefs system through Edges brainframe. Kouryuu, Double, Zero, and Terpfen had convened in the uninhabited square of the market to observe the new ranks among them. After introductions had been passed around, Yoshime had decided to take the liberty of examining the technological code of their newest acquaintance. A living being created entirely out of information...whats this? Advanced xtMML? Specially coded, I would presume.
[You have a sharp eye, Yoshime.]
It still disturbed her how Clef was able to talk to her through an almost telepathic link. But it couldnt be that. He must have been sending signals directly into the sensors of her brain.
You still never told me how you knew all of our names.
[That, Yoshime, is a trick of the trade. One of my many talents, I suppose you might call it. Edge was my original, shall we say, target of interest. Gathering information about his traveling companions was relatively easy for me.]
This is incredible, she mumbled. This kind of programming shouldnt be possible. I just dont get it.
[Perhaps its better that---]
But Clefs voice suddenly cut off into a harsh static as his presence blurred in the minds of the other robots. As Edge apprehensively took a step forward, Yoshime set herself to typing on her mini-computer.
Somethings wrong, she muttered. Clefs broadcast frequency is being... eroded. I dont know how else to put it. I cant really tell whats causing it though, some kind of shielded viral program. Seconds passed as her fingers clicked on the tiny keyboard. I cant get through to him. It looks like his very being is being exponentially deteriorated every second. Hell be gone in about ten minutes if we cant save what little substance he has left.
What can we do? asked Edge.
Yoshime tapped a finger on her forehead as she tried to think of a solution.
We need to move his cpu into a sterile shell, one that the virus cant reach. A body. We can move his consciousness into a mechanical body, that should stop the intruding source. She rounded on Double with the strength of a steamroller. Double! I need you find a body in the market, anything! I dont care what kind of sick deal you carry out or cheap piece of crap you deem worthy to buy, but just get a shell! AND PAY FOR IT!!!
Doubles body recoiled only slightly at the rebuff, but his face was already five miles down the street and still running.
Why do we have to help this guy? he said. He hasnt done anything for us, and look at the kind of trouble that has with himself right now. A undecipherable virus! Launched at long range too, thats something I dont want boring into my hide! Ive seen this kind of thing happen back when I was working for the government. The units attacked with this were attacked for a reason; more often than not because they were dangerous, rebelling, or they just plain knew too much. You want to ally yourself with somebody like that?
Yoshimes mouth was sealed, but Edge stepped forward in Clefs defense.
If it wasnt for Clef, I would have never learned how to counter the Shikens attack, he said. Without his help, I would have never learned how to mold my field field around me, and thus, I would have never been able to save Yoshime. She would not be standing here right now if it werent for him, and we might as well be dead. After all, you, like me, are bound to Yoshimes welfare. As a former government employee, I think you know what happens to the WNHR mecha that fails to carry out its mission.
The assassins lip closed forcefully over his clenched teeth, but he managed to keep his anger wrapped within.
I didnt think you would know that said Double. But I see what you mean. He turned to Yoshime stiffly. Ill get your mech as soon as possible.
As he ran off down the dusty street, Yoshime leaned over to Kouryuu for a low whisper.
Do you know what those two were talking about? she asked.
Kouryuu shook her head solemnly. Not many people know this, she said. But more often than not, the government mech that fails to finish its programming purpose ends up being automatically self-destructed, for security purposes of course. Ive seen it happen a couple times back with the rebels. It usually tends to be something built right into the robot itself rather than something activated from a remote source. Though you severed both of their links with their previous owners, even I dont know how the self-destruct failsafe works. Perhaps theyre both still linked to duty and perhaps they arent. I thought you mentioned that Edge didnt know anything about his past. Why would he remember something now?
Yoshime simply stared off into space before forcing an answer through her mouth.
I dont know, was all she said.
Clefs deterioration suddenly disappeared from Toys view. Just disappeared. No explanation, it simply vanished. Toy sat upon his cold throne in silent rage.
His specially designed probe virus had failed. That program had taken him years to program, years to calculate every single problem and escape that could ever be solved, years to ensure that this moment would not be held in vain. And yet, it was.
Clef was going to be a problem. He would need to be carefully monitored, just like the rest of Edges companions
Interesting, said Clef as he pivoted his right arm in place, testing its durability. I have never considered transferring my intelligence to a permanent body, though I suppose I had no choice in this case. I am in your debt, Yoshime Ozaki.
The only thing that Double had been able to find on hand was a short, child-like body that didnt even reach up to Yoshimes shoulder blades. The circular lines around its right eye marked it as an older model and its human-like style of clothing told the story of a marionette made for civil integration, not war. However, Clef seemed very pleased in his new guise of a young boy.
Yoshime beamed happily at having completed a successful program transfer as she hacked away with her computer still connected to Clefs consciousness.
That body doesnt have any weapons systems, so youll have to be careful, she said. However, it looks like whatever substance that virus erased is quickly replenishing itself. Ive never seen data recovery occur at this kind of magnitude though!
Clef nodded before turning to Edge.
I hope that I have proved my loyalty enough to you so as to earn your trust, he said solemnly. As of now, this body is a bit of burden to me, but I might as well be trapped in it until I can figure out who or what attacked me and tried to eliminate their threat. And thus I ask once again if I may accompany you on your journey, partially for your protection and partially to mentor you further in your powers. I owe you a debt, at the very least, the knowledge to harness and refine your control on the gravitational spectrum.
The green haired mecha nodded firmly.
I think youve done more than enough to earn mine-and everybodys- trust, he said, fixating a particular stare on Double. The assassin simply grinned sheepishly, all the while keeping a dangerous look on his visage. Edge just sighed and turned back to the newest member of his traveling party. Youre welcome to accompany us on our journey.
Incredible whistled Takamaru off to the side as she stared at Clefs head. Her interest had been entirely focused on his cpu ever since she learned what he was. What kind of programming do you use? Do you think you could teach this troubled hacker anything?
Clef simply looked at her with what was an attempt at a sly smile. The only thing that Takamaru was able to pick up though was a mechanical smirk.
I keep coded backups, said Clef. Among other special programs that I dont believe I shall release anytime soon.
Takamaru snickered and laughed before turning to face Yoshime.
Its been a while, but it looks like you still know how to throw one hell of a party! she said.
Why dont you come with us? asked Yoshime hopefully, but Takamaru only shook her head with a rueful grin.
Nah, I dont think Id make it in the mercenary business!
Im not a mercenary! Im still a hacker at heart!
Yeah... like the way you like to hack at my head
SHUT UP DOUBLE!!!
OW! Damnit, there you go again! Why couldnt you be nice like... well... damn. Zeros just crazy, and Kouryuu isnt all that nice, now is she? Heck, shes the biggest bitch Ive ever seen in my---AGH~! Damnit Kou! You didnt have to hit me too!!!
Uh... Yoshime... are they always like this?
Thats about right
Yoshime trotted happily down the market streets with Double and Edge by her side. Now that the danger had subsided, the town inhabitants were milling back in to claim their possessions. She personally didnt want to be caught in the rabble, but the group had lost all of their purchases in the Shiken attack, so they needed to make second rounds in order to insure that she and Iesu wouldnt starve in the middle of nowhere. And thus, after a warm farewell to Taka, she had pushed Edge and Double out to accompany her shopping excursion. Behind her, Edge and Double were engaged in a bright conversation, but their chatter was too low for her to hear. All the better, Double was probably going off with one of his stupid jokes again. It was a good thing that the fool wasnt a human, otherwise he would have been dead from all the slaps he had received. He always was such a jerk. Why couldnt he be more like Edge? Edge always knew how to behave properly... more or less. At least he didnt purposefully try to be an asshole.
Yoshime suddenly stopped in her tracks. About fifty meters in front of her, standing in the middle of the waves of human beings, a man was staring at her. His dark, short bangs bobbed softly in the low breeze, framing a face that would have been handsome if it werent for the sullen frown he wore. His worn jacket and pants were dulled by travel, and the huge pistol that he held gingerly at his side looked equally worn with use from both wear and violence.
The mysterious man suddenly turned and began to walk away. She felt compelled to follow him, but suddenly felt as if her breath had been cut off. Her limbs couldnt move. Her internal computer link had been cut off. What was happening? She couldnt move an inch. Was this some sort of trick? She spied Double out of the corner of her eye and saw that his face held a look of surprise and stark rage. He was trapped as well. Behind him she thought she saw the sun glint off of flying shards of metal, but she couldnt find Edge in her fixed range of vision.
A sharp pain hit her in the back of her head, and she fell into a world of blackness.
...
Edge awoke to find himself in the middle of the wreckage of a destroyed mech, the same mech he had crushed just before his senses left his body. He was still in the marketplace and people were staring at him in wonder and fear. Their faces were suddenly replaced with looks of surprise as Edge bent the light about him to render his own visage invisible. He didnt need the added attention of the local law enforcement if he was to figure out what had just happened.
He glanced about himself wildly, trying to recall everything that had happened. Yoshime had stopped, he and Double had almost run over her, and then Yoshime and Double disappeared. Edges primal anger raged inside, but he clamped it down into a distant corner of his being, hiding it away, keeping it from taking over his being. He didnt have time to be angry right now. Yoshime was gone, he had failed his mission...?
The anger continued to burn as Edge burst up from the ground, flying back to Kouryuu and the others. Let the people wonder what blew up all that dust, he needed to find Yoshime. Yoshime
Yoshime he whispered.
End Puppet Master
