Mahou Tsukai Tai!

Sae and Nanaka

A massive cylindrical object from space descends upon the earth. Armed forces try to destroy it, but they are no match against its seemingly insuperable powers. Once it lands, it deploys otermechanical devices to observe the goings-on of the humans; since it doesn't seem to be doing any harm, everyone decides to just leave it alone, hoping that the mysterious cylinder will do the same.
Takeo Takakura, president of the Kitanohashi Magic Club, however, is not comforted by this logic, and declares that it must be destroyed (mostly in an attempt to impress the girls in the club).
The best thing about this anime in my opinion is its characters. Sae Sawanoguchi, the protagonist of the story, is a clumsy girl who has almost no self-confidence in herself whatsoever, but is determined to become a good magician like Takeo, whom she is a great admirer of. She has a great deal of trouble translating her thoughts into intelligible sentences, and she tends to ramble on about things which coud be conveyed with only a few words. She also has difficulty walking without tripping.
Nanaka Nakatomi is Sae's best friend from childhood, who is always trying to convince Sae to quit the club before she hurts herself.
Takeo Takakura is in a constant struggle to back up his noble intentions with his actions. He wants to appear to be spiritually strong to everyone else, but he is easily intimidated by conflict. Additionally, he is readily distracted by the female gender. He tends to get carried away with his rather wanton imagination to the point that he hallucinates even.
Akane Aikawa is a new member of the magic club who seems to possess a natural talent for magic. However, she'd much rather go out on dates than attend any of the club meetings.
Ayanojou Aburatsubo is the vice president of the club, and is also quite skilled. It becomes quickly apparant that he has feelings for Takeo. Takeo does not requite these feelings.
Mahou Tsukai Tai! is one of my all-time anime series. There are six OVA episodes. You can order fansubs at ChiAnime Fansub Distribution. I got mine from ChiAnime and they were very high-quality tapes.
There is also a manga series. Sometimes Nikaku Animart carries the occasional volume (in Japanese).
