Chapter Three: So Who's It From?
The morning sun the next day found Artemis draped lazily over a large
tree branch in the Juuban campus. He yawned and tried to catch up on
the sleep that he had lost when a blond tornado had woken up and swept
through the room he was sleeping in.
The branch swayed a bit as another cat occupied it. "Luna, do you
mind? I'm trying to get some sleep," Artemis said, not looking up from
his paws.
Luna sat down beside him. "Then why didn't you just stay at home?"
"Following Mina-chan around is an old habit that's hard to break." He
stretched and sat up. "So, how's Usagi?"
Luna sighed. "Still depressed."
"Depressed?" Artemis' eyebrows - if a cat has any - shot up. "But
Mina-chan told me last night that she was all smiles yesterday."
"Apparently, she was wrong. She even had a white rose in her hand."
"Actually, that rose was the one that had made her happy. Mina-chan
said somebody left it on her desk."
Luna shrugged. "Well, whatever the effect the rose had on her seemed
to have worn off by the time she got home." She turned towards the
window of Usagi's classroom. "I wonder what happened?"
*****
In the classroom, three people were thinking the exact same thing.
Usagi had just sat down at her desk, minutes late for the roll call.
For some reason, the teacher didn't scold her anymore.
Ami hypothesized.
Minako couldn't concentrate on the lesson. She just kept sneaking
worried looks at Usagi, who was numbly fixing her things under her
desk.
She watched as Usagi's eyes widened and pulled her hand from the desk,
holding something in her hand. Minako looked closely, her own eyes
widening.
It was a yellow rose.
Now it was her turn to begin thinking deeply.
Makoto watched as both Usagi *and* Minako leaned their head on their
hand. she thought, frowning. She
found herself imitating them, then she knocked her forehead with her
hand.
Minako turned just in time to see Usagi crush the yellow rose in her
hands.
*****
The next day wasn't any different from the rest, only Usagi managed to
arrive early - without her noticing. She was even earlier than Ami!
Usagi dreaded looking under her desk, for fear of finding another rose.
But she didn't need to look under.
For there, on top of her table, was a red rose.
Usagi openly cried. White and yellow roses were enough, but red . . .
? It was just too much. All she could think about was Mamoru as she
sobbed in her seat.
"Hey."
Usagi looked up and saw . . . Mamoru. she thought,
Andy was looking at her, concerned. "Are you okay? Umm . . ." he
patted his pockets and brought out a handkerchief. "Need a hanky?"
Usagi stared at the handkerchief momentarily before shaking her head.
"No, thanks," she said quietly.
Andy nodded slowly. "Umm, I’m sorry."
"What for?"
Andy pointed at the rose. "I never thought that giving you roses would
make you cry."
Usagi looked at the rose. "You mean . . . you gave me those roses?"
Andy nodded. "I just wanted to cheer you up. I mean, you always look
so sad ever since I got here . . . and . . . well, you know." He
shrugged. "Life isn't always downhill."
Usagi found herself smiling gently at him. "Arigato."
Andy stared at her, blushing. He then cleared his throat. "I'm, uh,
Andy Spencer." He held out his hand.
"I know. I'm Tsukino Usagi," she said, shaking hands with him.
"I take it your last name is Tsukino?" he asked, sitting down on his
chair. "I don't think I'll ever get used to the way you guys say
names."
Usagi noted his American accent. "So you're from America, huh? Where
there?"
"Nice, sunny California. Why'd you ask?"
"Nothing."
Usagi thought.
Andy looked at her for a while. "Can I ask a question? Why were you
so down for so long?"
Usagi blushed and looked down. Andy blushed as well. "'Guess it's
kind of personal, huh?" he asked.
"Yeah. Personal . . ." Usagi said, turning away from him.
"Uhh . . ." He scratched his head. "Are you American, too?"
Usagi shook her head. "Iie."
"Oh. Not even half?"
"Not even half." Usagi smiled up at him. "I take it you said that
because of my blond hair? And my blue eyes?"
Andy nodded. "Yeah. Umm . . . if you're not American, then are you
British?"
"Iie. I'm a pure Japanese."
"I thought Japanese people have darker hair and eyes."
Usagi ran a hand over her blond locks. "Well, not all of them, I
guess."
"You didn't dye it, did you? And you're not wearing contacts?"
"No!" Usagi laughed.
"How about that girl beside you?"
"Oh, you mean Mina-chan?" Usagi turned to look at her table. She
wasn't there yet. "She's pure Japanese, too, and no, she does not wear
contacts, nor did she dye her hair. But she went to England once."
Andy looked at Ami's desk. "And her? Don't tell me the girl behind
you didn't dye her hair. I've never seen a person with naturally blue
hair before!"
"Well, you have now," somebody behind him said. He turned around and
saw Ami smiling at him. He felt his blood rush up to his face.
Ami turned to Usagi. "Ohayo, Usagi-chan! It's nice to see that
you're early for a change," she greeted her.
Usagi stood up. "Spencer-san, this is Mizuno Ami, my best friend.
Ami, meet Spencer Andy, our new classmate."
Ami and Andy shook hands. "Nice to meet you," Ami said.
"You too. Are you sure you didn't dye your hair?"
Ami laughed. "No, I didn't. It just came naturally, I think."
Morning passed by with the three of them talking, and soon, Andy was
also introduced to Makoto and Minako, who were both thrilled with the
prospect of getting acquainted with the handsome young man. They found
out that Andy had been the one who was giving roses to Usagi. Makoto
mentioned that he not only looked like her old sempai, he was also as
sweet as he was, too. Minako almost asked why her sempai had left her
if he was as sweet as Andy was.
Lunchtime came, and the four girls gathered in the cafeteria, with
Usagi in high spirits like she had been in two days before.
"So, how was he?" Usagi asked, opening her lunch box.
"How was who?" Ami asked.
"You know. Spencer-san."
". . . sweet," Makoto said.
"Kind," Minako added.
Ami thought for a while. "Umm . . . nice."
Usagi leaned her head on her hand. "He looks like Mamo-chan, don't you
think?"
Her three friends looked at each other. Then they turned to her.
"What?" Usagi asked.
"Nothing . . ." Makoto said.
Minako bit off the end her sandwich and leaned forward. "I'm actually
kind of happy he managed to cheer you up. We barely know him, and he
did a better job than we did!"
Usagi looked down guiltily. "I'm sorry, minna. I know I had you
worried for quite some time." She then perked up. "But I do
appreciate all you've done for me. Really, I do!"
"We know, Usagi-chan. We know," Ami assured her.
Makoto winked at Minako. "Well, I guess we can relax a bit now, don't
you think?"
"Yeah." Minako stretched her arms and fingers. "Trying to restrain
Rei at times is completely exhausting."
Usagi looked confused. "I don't get it. If I was so depressed, then
why were you trying to restrain Rei when I couldn't have done anything
wrong?"
"Because you were driving her up the wall by being so silent," Minako
giggled. "She could hardly contain herself!"
Usagi smiled widely. "I guess I'm still driving her crazy even when
I'm not trying, huh?"
Her smile was contagious. Soon, Ami, Makoto and Minako were smiling
widely, and they all laughed.
*****
One day, while the teacher was lecturing, Andy passed Usagi a note.
Usagi looked at him questioningly, but he just winked and turned back
to the discussion. Shrugging, she opened the note and began to read
it.
Usagi,
Nobody's showed me around Tokyo before.
Could you take me around so I won't get
lost when I go out?
Andy
P.S. 1 - 4 - 3 - 4 - 4
<1-4-3-4-4? What does that mean?> Usagi thought. Nevertheless, she
wrote back:
Spencer-san,
Sure, why not? Say, this Saturday all
right?
By the way. What does 1 - 4 - 3 - 4 - 4
mean?
Usagi
Andy wrote back:
Usagi,
Saturday's fine. Meet you at Juuban
Park at 9 am.
Try and find out what the number means!
I'll treat you out to lunch if you do!
Andy
Usagi scratched her head. What *do* those numbers mean?
