The Crown Prince of Saillune and his daughter, Amelia.

What's up with Amelia? Why is she so gung-ho for justice?

One of the more familiar explanations for Amelia's pursuit of "absolute justice" is that her mother was killed in a brutal way in front of her. Now, I know that would be more than enough to send me on a quest for justice, but it doesn't help that her father is an absolute nut. With her mother rumored to be dead (we don't ever see her), and her older sister no where to be seen, Amelia and her father have only had each other.

So why is it Amelia can be such a basket case?

Amelia has a very close relationship with her father, and she practically idolizes him. When Amelia and her father first appeared in the original Slayers series, I noticed something interesting. Amelia seemed to calm down a whole lot when Phil wasn't around. This lead me to speculate about the Princess and her father, and I came up with an interesting theory. I think that Amelia is striving to live up to the example that her father has set (you have to admit, the guy may be a nut, but he's a popular ruler in Saillune), and this in turn leads her to act out impulsively. She feels that she has to prove to her father that she's strong enough to take care of herself and be a strong ruler for Saillune when the time comes. Now that her older sister is no longer around, Amelia has been forced into the position of second in line for the crown. She's had a great responsibility thrust onto her shoulders, and she's doing everything she can to prove that she's capable of handling it. I think she's secretly afraid of being seen as a failure in the eyes of her father. I don't think she's even aware of what she's doing. All she knows is that she's been raised a certain way, and she's reacting to situations the way that she believes is right. She is learning, however, that everything is not strictly black and white (traveling with Lina Inverse, one minute a bandit killer, the next wanted for something, can do that). I, personally, think that we could use more people around like Amelia. The world would be a much nicer place if everyone tried to keep the world a "just" place.

This family is nuts! Take me back!
